Insurance acts as intermediary between buyer and provider and has no incentive to provide a better price or higher quality. This is especially true in the movement from the medical model to the business model of health care. “The United States spends more on healthcare than any other country in the world, in 2008 US healthcare costs were 2.3 trillion or 7,000 per capita. The US per capita cost is 45% greater than our northern neighbor Canada, and 33% greater than Norway”. (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), 2011). The business model is profit based. Requiring a profit almost always includes streamlining of services and mandating cost controls. Both of which limit the insured’s access to services, drugs, and new technology.…

We strongly urge you to consider long term care insurance with our increasing life span and the increasing costs of care for long term illness. There are many types of long term care insurance with a wide range of costs depending on your age when you procure the policy and the type of coverage you desire. We were fortunate to obtain a group plan long term care insurance policy offered through our employer when we were in our late forties. Parents of employees could apply as well, so my mother signed up for her policy at age 78. In order to obtain long term care insurance the applicant needs to meet the medical requirements of the insurance company. For example my stepfather, who had been successfully treated for prostate cancer within the past five years of his application, did not qualify.…

“Between 1929 and 1930, average hospital receipts plummeted from more than $200 per patient to less than $60. Hospitals then began to turn to insurance plans as a way to guarantee a steady cash flow by spreading the financial risk.” (Wasley, 1993). This is where health care insurance started to become a large aspect of care for people in the United States. This is also the time where supply and demand became hard for people because there was a great need for care but not money to pay for the care.…

We are stuck between a free-market system and a government-run system. As the government continues to increase subsides and provide insurance for more and more people under Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare, as well as new stipulations under the Affordable Care Act, the system can not realistically be described as a free-market. This has created dramatic price increases in health care and has also made the costs of care entirely unrealistic because there is a total diffusion of responsibility for the payment. Additionally, as emergency rooms are required to provide care to people in need, all people technically can access care. However, this care is extremely expensive and an inefficient use of valuable resources. In order to prevent people from “free riding” in this system and just going to emergency rooms but never paying their bills, it follows that everyone must have health insurance. However, in order for that to be possible monetarily, there have to be subsidies and policies that prevent people from being excluded from coverage for preexisting conditions or other factors. Ultimately, it makes little sense to provide universal coverage of emergency care but not provide primary or preventative care, which is much more cost effective, efficient and…
