Working in TDT is familiar to me because I worked in the school system where children received therapeutic services through Medicare. The setting at TLC is a little different because the children come to the agency to receive services after school. The workers are hands on and at first I wondered why there were so many of them, but after I observed some of the children’s temperament I understood why the children needed so much supervision. Some of the children were calm, but there were several children that had complete melt downs. Some of them used offensive language and it was difficult for the workers to manage their behavior. Some of the children were disruptive and the workers experienced some difficulty engaging the children in the activities that were planned for the day. I did my best to integrate myself by playing games with the children and helping them with their art projects; however, I do not feel that TDT is a good fit for me. I am realizing that working with children is not a strength of mine. I am learning that it is hard for me to invest other people’s children because I invest so much in my own children. I think it will be difficult to set clear boundaries and managing ethical dilemmas may also be a challenge for me. Social workers provide services; however, we can be a disservice if we are not equipped to adequately serve certain
