Integrated Inquiry Planning Model
As schools are making the shift to the twenty-first-century, educators are tasked with an unending challenge and responsibility of maintaining student engagement, learning to develop the necessary knowledge and skills needed in the twenty-first century. Studies indicate that Australian educators are able to produce and guide students towards learning outcomes, through opportunities presented within the classroom (Reynolds, 2014, p.42). To allow children to learn through authentic experiences and develop twenty-first-century skills the inquiry-based learning approach has been incorporated into teaching methods by educators. This approach allows for curriculum integration which provides educators with opportunities to not only cater to difference and diversity in their classroom; but also allow students to express their understandings and integrate their knowledge and skills to multiple learning areas.

This model provides opportunities for students to collaborate, particularly in the ‘going further’ phase where differentiation of the inquiry is emphasised. Similarly, the 5E teaching and learning model utilizes five stages of learning that incorporate multi-modal text, open investigations, discussions, and questions to not only cater to the students different learning abilities but to develop their understanding.     In order for students to maximize their learning experience is important to be aware of their preferred learning style. A great tool that is used to determine the learning style preferences is the VARK (, audio, reading / writing, visual kinesthetic) questionnaire. Assessing VARK learning style was developed by Neil Fleming in 1987. The questionnaire consists of 16 questions with multiple response options. Respondents are allowed to skip a question or multiple choice response options if necessary (Barman, Jaafar, and Rahim, 2009). Those who took the survey questions are easy to relate to, because they are based on real life situations (Rogers, 2009).     The VARK analysis quiz is to evaluate learning styles. VARK stands for Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic. When taking the quiz, the scores indicated that there was a multi-modal preference for learning. Multi-modal indicates “multiple preferences which gives the learner anywhere from 2-4 modes for learning and communication with others” (VARK: A Guide to Learning Styles Questionnaire, 2013). It gives the learner an arsenal of tools to use to communicate, teach, and learn vs. one preferred method.
