1. You need to incorporate at least 3 secondary sources (in addition to your pieces of art) within your essay, but no more than 20% of your essay should be other people’s ideas and/or words.
2. You must use proper MLA format for all papers in this class, including first-page formatting with a relevant and creative title, paginated pages, in-text parenthetical citation, a Works Cited page.
3. You will probably use a combination of summary, paraphrase, and quotation from a variety of sources. In order to avoid plagiarism, you must identify the source of all borrowed ideas and words either in the body of the sentence and/or in the in-text parenthetical citation. These quick descriptions are taken from the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL):
Quotations must be identical to the original, using a narrow segment of the source. They must match the source document word for word and must be attributed to the original author. And all quotations must be integrated into your own sentences, not floating as a sentence on its own:
Incorrect: Jay Sheppard, an ornithologist, has been studying the bald eagle. "The bald eagle seems to have stabilized its population, at the very least, almost everywhere" (96).
Correct: Although the bald eagle is still listed as endangered, the species has recovered numbers. According to ornithologist Jay Sheppard, "The bald eagle seems to have stabilized its population, at the very least, almost everywhere" (96).
Paraphrasing involves putting a passage from source material into your own words. A paraphrase must also be attributed to the original source. Paraphrased material is usually shorter than the original passage, taking a somewhat broader segment of the source and condensing it slightly.
Summarizing involves putting the main idea(s) into your own words, including only the main point(s). Once again, it is necessary to attribute summarized ideas to the original source. Summaries are significantly shorter than
