This system consist of the biggest organ in the body which is the skin. This organ helps protect from microbes and other elements. It acts as a physical barrier to the environment and it absorbs nutrients from the sun and other sources. Also, the skin permits the sensation of touch, heat and cold and it helps regulate body temperature. This organ makes up 12-15% of body weight and it has 1-2 meters of surface area. Because it's in …show more content…
The Epidermis is a thin outer layer of the skin and it’s made out of Stratified Squamous Epithelium tissue. This thin layer it contains different cells that it gives the different functions. The majority of the cells in the Epidermis are Keratinocytes which they produce Keratin and it stiffens the epidermal tissue which it also forms the fingernails. Another type of cells that this thin layer has are the Melanocytes which they produce melanin which synthesizes the pigment of the skin. The Langerhans’ cells are macrophages that help to activate the immune system. The last type of cells that this structural layer produce are Merkel cells which are joined with the sensory nerve endings. The Epidermis doesn’t contain any blood supply of its own, and that one of the reasons this layer sheds dead cells causing new cell to reach the top.The Epidermis is divided into four separate parts and in some areas where thick are is present, there is an extra layer. The first layer of the Epidermis is the Stratum Basale, this layer is deepest layer but the most important one because it divides cells by the process of mitosis. The next layer is the Stratum Spinosum , this layer has high concentration of Langerhans’ cells and it also contains keratinocytes and melanin granules. The Stratum Granulosum is the next layer, it contains keratinocytes that are going under physical changes, turning them into tough
