Chris Lim 2/1/14 ENG 100 Ms.Levine Essay #1

Essay #1 In Chua's Essay, "How Chinese Mothers Are Superior", she shows parental sacrifice by spending time and engage in her daughter's piano lessons. Chua literally spends more hours than any parent would in the Western culture. As a parent, she would spend 10 times as long every day drilling activities with her daughter. She wants her child to excel; and in order to excel in something you have to work hard for it. Also, she is very concerned for her daughter because she cares about her and she wants her to excel. It must be very exhausting for Chua to show what parental sacrifice truly means to her.
My parents was always there to support me in what I do and they sacrifice their time from what they're doing and just be there for me and engage in my learning as they do now. Since I'm in college they still show that same support as they did from the very first day I started school. I know that being a good parent isn't as easy as I seem to think that it would typically be. It requires a lot of time and patience (depending on how many children you have) and truly, it's just as important to support them and sacrifice you time if they need help on anything, such as homework, driving or even how to work a computer for the first time. My parents personally told me that when I do have a family of my own, never leave their side, be there for them and sacrifice you time as it takes a lot of patience and effort.
It's like an natural instinct for parents to sacrifice their time for their children. For example, parents would just give up on what they usually do and focus on their children's needs. Like all parents, they make unconditional sacrifices for their child and they want what's best for them. They want their children to grow up to have a better life than they did. My dad and mom wanted to do the same thing. They provided me with mental, spiritual and physical guidance when it comes to sacrificing for me. That to me, was the most interesting and loving experience that I ever faced with both my mom and dad, and they did the same thing with my younger sister, Belle.
When I have children of my own, I want them to know that I have their back and be there for them. To tell them what my parents did for me in my life, to support me and guide me in the right direction. I,too, personally want what's best for my kids and under no circumstances, would sacrifice my time for them. Nothing is going to be easy when it comes to parental sacrifice. Chua state's that even Chinese parents believe that they care more about their children and are willing to sacrifice much more for them than Westerners. My parents are just like what Chua described, the type of parents who would do anything thing for their kids and be more involved in what they do. That's what I believe to be an example of being a good parent.
One day, I will look back at all the sacrifices that everyone has made in the family and reflect upon it. Sacrifice is important to being a good parent because without sacrificing for your children, you wouldn't care about what's going on in their life as they grow up and you would end up failing to be a good parent. Parents want to do what's best for them. "Preparing them for the future, arming them with skills, work habits, and inner confident that no one can take away"(Chua: How Chinese Mothers Are Superior pg 321, The Prose Reader, Tenth Ed., by Flachmann & Flachmann). Therefore, sacrificing for your children is important to me regardless of the situation they're in. Theses are great examples that show what a good parent is when they sacrifice their time with their child, just like Chua did.

Western parents will not over-ride their children and allow their children do what it is they desire. Another story Chua told in the article was when she was teaching Lulu, her daughter, when she was 7 the piano piece “The Little White Donkey” by French composer Jacques Ibert. Al though this piece is cute, it is extremely difficult for young players to learn because the two hands have to keep schizophrenically different rhythms. She used every tactic she could think of so Lulu could learn the piece even when Lulu punched, thrashed and kicked. Her husband Jed, a Western parent, told her to stop insulting Lulu and maybe she really couldn’t do the technique. Chua, a Chinese parent, expected Lulu to learn it no matter the excuse. By the end of the story Lulu could play the piece. However, Jed wanted Lulu to be happy and he thought having her stop playing the piece would make her happy, but Chua believed Lulu owed it to her to learn the…

Is Chua harming her children or is she setting them up for success? According to Chua, “What Chinese parents understand is that nothing is fun until you’re good at it”. (Chua 306) In my personal opinion, children need that extra push. The extra push I am referring to is discipline. Chua’s parenting skill is definitely setting them up for success. The wretched part about this parenting skill is that not everyone agrees. In…

The writer in the excerpt Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior, Amy Chua, does a great job of justifying Chinese-style parenting by contrasting it to Western-style parenting. She tells her audience that through her strict orders and threats does her daughter, Lulu, succeed in playing and mastering a very difficult piano piece; Western parents with high concerns for their kids’ psyches would only “ask their kids to try their best.” Chua also reveals the generality of Chinese parents constantly working their children by making use of every moment of time possible at any cost, whereas Western parents would give up when their children puts up any form of resistance. Western parents will persuade themselves that they are not disappointed in how their children are. While through the multitude of resolute practices, the children of Chinese parents will develop high quality skills, and unyielding confidence.…

In Amy Tan’s short story “Two Kinds” Jing-Mei, the story’s main character, takes a stand against her mother. The story opens as she describes her childhood, which was full of pain and resentment caused by never becoming the “prodigy” that her mother desperately wanted her to be. Despite her best intentions, Jing-Mei always fell short of her mother’s expectations and one night, she made a pact to herself that she would never allow her mother to try to change her. After her mother saw a young Chinese girl play the piano on a television show she decided that Jing-Mei should take lessons from the neighbor. The neighbor, Mr. Chong, Jing-Mei discovered was deaf, and that she easily could get away with playing the wrong notes. Months later, Mr. Chong and her mother entered Jing-Mei in a talent contest. She believed that her inner prodigy would surface and allow her to play well, but the performance proved to be an utter disaster. Two days later, while being urged to go to practice an argument of devastating proportions began. Her mother never spoke of piano lessons ever again. Decades later, she received the family’s piano as a present for her thirtieth birthday. Months after her mother’s death, she plays it and realizes the truth about her mother’s intentions. The central idea in Tan’s story is, parents cannot control or dictate their children’s lives but only try to guide them in the right direction.…

In addition to Tan’s efficient use of pathos, her audience is vast, as it can cover any parent-child relationship, as well as Chinese Americans. As she becomes closer to her mother she says, “I began to see how much I actually knew about my mother and myself”(8). In the Chinese culture, they believe that the child inherits the parents’ legacy. Tan states, “It was a part of a larger legacy passed from generation to generation, grandmother to mother to daughter”(4). In…

Whenever I do something stupid that results in me getting hurt, my dad always reminds me that “education is expensive”.…

Parents should allow their children to grow up on themselves for them to be able to make difficult decisions, so they realize how it is out in the real world. In both the articles “‘Snowplow Parents’ may be trapping their children” and “Kids of Helicopter Parents Are Sputtering Out” show that students’ parents are way more involved in their lives than they should be. Students should be allowed to have more freedom to be able to have fun, but they should also know that having an education is important to become successful or at least be smart in an area of their interest. As students graduate high school they are only a step away from being left alone by their parents and having freedom. Parents should be there to listen to their child’s needs…

As I grew up and matured my parents became more lax with the rules and I was able to practice my own judgement. They changed their parenting style to permissive when I was seventeen. I was able to stay as late as I perceived was okay or even miss a class. This allowed me to develop my sense of self and my independence. When I entered university there were no longer rules, but still have the same amount of warmth, support and…

Both of my parents went to college and both of them also went on to get a post-graduate degree. To them a college education is a necessity to be successful in life. Neither one of them expects me to get into or go to Harvard or Yale, but they do expect me to go to a respectable college. Some teenagers often do not go to college because they must get a job to support their family. Thankfully my parents have always said that I do not need to get a job until after college. The academic and financial support my parents have provided me has cause me not to think of college as a unattainable dream, but almost as another step in my educational , similar to high school or middle school. My parent’s knowledge of the college and the admission process has taught what I need to do in order to put myself in a position to get into a respectful college. The advice and knowledge from my parents has taught me not to just worry about my grades because colleges do not like book worms. Colleges like kids who show they can manage many activities while still maintain a solid 4+ GPA. This attitude has been a positive for me because now I am in many extra-curricular activities including playing Varsity lacrosse, being on the Academic Bowl team, and playing two instruments. Without my parents I could most definitely see myself being a book worm, but thanks to them shaping the attitude that colleges look at more than just grades I have become more outgoing. My parents influence on my view n attitude of college has most definitely been a positive one, and thanks to them, so far, I have been very…
