Interpersonal Communication Paper Whether it was a friendship or a romantic relationship, we have all experienced some sort of passionate relationship in our lives. Greta Scacchi puts it simply that, “A relationship requires a lot of work and commitment.” The effort you put into a relationship determines whether or not the relationship continues to develop or deteriorate. There are multiple elements that need to be established in order to determine where each relationship you experience is growing or fading away. Interpersonal communication can be explained as a special form of human communication that occurs when two people interact simultaneously and attempt to mutually influence each other, usually for the purpose of managing relationships. There are three attributes that help us better understand that nature of interpersonal communication. To start, interpersonal communication involves quality. Instead of treating people like objects, such as impersonal communication suggests, we should value each human as a unique being. This helps develop strong personal relationships and allows for you to separate your friends from your acquaintances. Secondly, interpersonal communication involves mutual influence. Not implying that interpersonal communication exclusively involves persuasion, but that people who interact affect each other in some way. And last but not least, interpersonal communication helps manage relationships. Relationships are ongoing connections we make with others through interpersonal communication. For some people the term relationship can signal something serious and usually romantic, but it can also be used to describe a wide variety of relationships like with family members, coworkers, classmates, and friends.
