Interpersonal communication reflection: When Harry Met Sally
When Harry first meets Sally, they look really different. From the very beginning scene, they argue as they have different perspectives on the opposite-sex friendships. Nonetheless, they eventually become good friends after they self-disclose their intimate information to each other. However, after their unexpected sex, their relationship becomes awkward. In the end, Harry finally finds out that he loves Sally and reveals his feelings. Over the course of their relationship in the movie When Harry Met Sally, Knapp’s stages of interpersonal communication develop and change.
Knapp defines the stage of initiation as conversation openers. Harry and Sally encounter each other in an unpleasant way. Sally finds him kissing his girlfriend. Obviously, they are not interested in each other at first as Harry has a girlfriend and Sally is a good friend of her. As a result, they do not really greet in the car. Sally tells Harry that they are just carpool partners.
While driving to New York City, they discuss about opposite-sex friendship. This scene falls into the experimenting stage. From this scene, Harry and Sally get to know better of each other’s different characteristic. Harry thinks that it is impossible to establish a true opposite-sex friendship because sex part always gets in the way. Sally argues him that she does not have sexual interest to her male friends. One of Knapp’s four purposes of experimenting stage is that it can be an audition for a future friendship or a way of increasing the scope of a current relationship. Harry and Sally’s relationship does not develop further because they do not find each other attractive in the experimenting stage After five years, they meet in the airport and take same plane. At this time, Harry is going to get married and Sally is in a relationship. When Harry asked Sally, she

Sally and Ralph appear playing wild music and smoking before they fall in a fit of ridiculous laughter. There is no real clear moment before other than the piano session and the implication this has been going on for a bit of time. The objective isn’t very clear and while Sally makes it clear she is using Ralph for the joint he has, there is very little true relationship between them. It isn’t until Sally’s baby cries again that she resumes an objective and emotional state similar to previous. When Mae asks Sally about the baby’s name, Kirk makes the choice to take more apathetic and less irritated approach to answering her question. While this choice works and makes sense, it feels somewhat rehearsed and could be stronger.…

‘When Harry Met Sally’ is a romantic comedy set from the mid 1970’s to the mid-to-late 1980’s. From the beginning the film seemed like the perfect example from Mark Knapp’s 10 stages of relational development. There was a plethora of talking and Harry was quite witty while Sally was very sweet and up-beat. As a personal opinion, at first the film seemed to be slightly boring plot-wise – a man and a woman meet to travel a ways to the city? Sounds like the perfect situation to ‘fall in love’ in and have a happily ever-after. Though, as more of the movie was watched, it became more interesting and less of an assignment requirement.…

Next, we are going to look at how no matter what communication is irreversible. In the movie Harry tells Sally she is attractive, Sally takes it the wrong way and becomes upset. The first time that Stanley and Blanche meet, there is a bit of normalcy which is a stark contrast from the very hateful tension that is going to come, mainly because of the distrust. But in the beginning, the readers already see Blanche’s reluctance to tell the truth when Stanley asks her if she is a teacher and she conveniently leaves out the detail that she has recently been fired from her position, a scandalous fact that will be revealed in a later scene (Williams 26-27). Stanley and Blanche’s relationship is very complex because they are so different: “To Blanche, Stanley is like death: He is nonreducible. Paradoxically, his primitive life force is death to her, because she cannot turn it into a game, her game. It is intolerably real. Stanley is male sun to her feminine mists. He is the only man around who will not let her say, without choking: "You may think you can crack me with desire, but, instead, I will make you bow to appearances” (Kolin). The conflict between the two characters lead to tragic mishap for a vulnerable Blanche. After steadily taking cheap shots at eachother Stanley decides to look into the not so pleasant past of his high class sister-in-law. After finding out the truth of Blanche’s time in Laurel, Stanley finds his way to take the final blow to knock Blanche down for good. Though it is hurting everyone else in his life, he reveals all of Blanche’s…

The scene directions at the beginning of scene 4 clearly show the basis for Stella and Stanley's relationship: SEX. Sex with Stanley has an almost mystical effect on Stella. It seems that Stella is quite happy in her own reality once satisfying her desire. Her face is described as "serene," and "her eyes and lips have that almost narcotized tranquility that is in the faces of Eastern idols." Stella's comment that "there are things that happen between a man and a woman in the dark—that sort of make everything else seem—unimportant," also emphasizes her purely physical relationship with Stanley.…

The suggestion that the characters are hiding, or are even unsure about their sexual identity is immediately indicated to the audience through the cross-dressing of the cast. In Act One Betty is played by a male actor and this is not just due to the question of identity, but more so of sexual repression. Clive is obviously very conservative and traditional, and expects his wife Betty to follow her subservient roles as a woman. Betty is very aware of this and she strives to become what men desire, to such an extent that she ultimately becomes, quite literally, a man. She is very repressed by Clive and appears to be totally reliant on him. She feels he offers her too much security and comfort for her to fulfil her own personal desires, as we see when she talks with Harry. They discuss adventure but Betty believes she “will never go in person” (1.1.22-23) because of her duties. It is evident Betty wishes to be with Harry yet she runs away from him once admits his mutual attraction to her and tries to take her in his arms. However, in Act Two Betty appears…
