The short story “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara is about a group of young poor children as they venture downtown to a toy store. They gaze upon all the toys in wonderment, but mostly they are shocked by the price of the toys. They feel out of place in such an upscale establishment and do not know how to act. Upon leaving the store and heading home, they reflect on how unfair society really is. There are people who are so well off they can afford toys that could feed a family for months, and other people like themselves that barely have enough money to get by. The central idea of the story is the examination of wealth and poverty in America.…

All texts are deliberately constructed to convey an agenda and a set of values. This means that every composer has a purpose, which is based on the issues arising from their context and audience. To that end, the composer uses conflicting perspectives as a vehicle for successfully conveying their purpose to the audience. So, through the representation of events, personalities and situations (which utilises form, language and structural devices), the responder is positioned to accept the perspective that the composer has represented as valid or credible. As a consequence, the composer is able to successfully impart their values to the audience. Examples of conflicting perspectives in society and the media come in the form of William Shakespeare’s…
When faced with internal or external conflicts it is not uncommon to lose your dignity. The purpose of a history book is so that we can learn from others lessons. Since the dawn of time civilization has planted seeds in the minds of men to be a man of dignity but to also obsess over the success of wealth as well as being highly respected by others. Gaines’ A Lesson Before Dying shows us the attributes that Jefferson and Grant take on while figuring out how to become a man. Gaines gives us prime examples of why education is so important and how deprivation of knowledge can cause a loss of…
In Tennessee 1923, two young boys, Rafe McCawley (Jesse James) and Danny Walker (Reiley McClendon), are playing together in the back of an old biplane, pretending to be soldiers fighting the Germans in World War I. After Rafe's father (Steve Rankin) land his biplane and leaves, Rafe and Danny climb into the plane and Rafe accidentally starts it, giving the boys their first experience at flight. Soon afterward, Danny's father (William Fichtner) comes to take him home, and beats Danny, saying that he is of no account. Rafe hits Danny's father with a two by four and calls him a dirty German. Danny's father reacts by saying he fought the Germans in France and hopes the two boys never have to see what he saw. He then walks into the wheat fields, and Danny tells Rafe that he is his best friend, before joining his father.…
Throughout the essay How to Mark a Book the author, Mortimer J. Adler, brings up the idea and topic of what makes a book worthy of being ‘marked up’ and what he considers to be a light read. He uses examples such as Paradise Lost and Gone with the Wind; The latter being deemed not as worthy. The reason being because it simply does not make you think quite as hard as say, something such as the Bible would. It does not require as much thought and conversation with the author. With that being said, what determines if a book is light? If an easy read of fiction could simply fall into this category, perhaps a book such as The Giver would not require as much thought in comparison to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, therefore not worthy of being marked up. The purpose of this essay will be to determine whether or not…

We all know that, in life, one tiny misconception can deliver catastrophic results. That is especially true in the works of Shakespeare (except, in Shakespeare, everyone ends up dead). Cassius’s forged letters, Decius’s conversation with Caesar, and Pindarus’s misreading of Titinius’ battle against Antony are all prime examples of the fallacies in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and their outcomes.…

From this project my learning changed by the way others thesis statements were different than my thesis. By the way my peers used betrayal in their thesis, it showed me the extent of my peers learning capacity. Also, this showed me how many different forms of betrayal can be shown, by using the same scene as me, in the play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. My peers thesis statements challenged my thesis statement by the different forms of betrayal they showed.…
The story, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines is a awesome book so far. I can relate to this whole situation in numerous of ways. This story just bring back a time that my brother had to go through years ago and how he is still paying the price even though he guilty in all matters. I believe that the court system is full of a lot of stuff. They convict incents people for no reason. I can imagine how not only Jefferson but his family is going through. My life has change in way that I couldn’t imagine after my brother was locked up and sentence to life in prison.…
