My lack of exposure and competency of substance abuse established self-doubt within me. There is a great amount of individuals who come to the STICU who were drinking or using substance prior to admission to the hospital. My lack of knowledge places a barrier in my ability to correctly execute the interventions needed to help the patient move forward from consistent substance abuse.
• Your experiences with supervision, colleagues, or inter-professional practice o During this week my supervisor pushed me to understand the importance of examining family dynamics. My supervisor assisted me with learning how negative and positive family dynamics can have an effect on the individual once discharged.
• Any other issues important to your professional development. o I was encouraged this week to advocate for my patients despite other colleagues or inter-professionals opinion. It is common for health care works in the hospital to not understanding the holistic aspect of a patient. This concept is common within the health care setting and outside of the setting. Despite the field, I was reminded that advocating for client rights or desired health care is ensuring the client has a right to determine their treatment
