Nayeli acts fearless throughout the whole novel. She keeps her dreams in front of her, and is always reaching for them. Nayeli keeps God in her favor also. She states, “If God is with us,” Nayeli pontificated, “what harm can befall us” (59; ch. 8). On this journey, this is very ironic; although the friends are trying to bring back men to their town, they are doing it illegally, and thinking God will have their backs. When he met Naylei at the dump, he confronted her with being big and bold. He startled her at first, but then she realized that he would protect her. He started off being confident, and that is why Nayeli stuck with him. Atomiko states, “If we get separated and you get caught, I’ll meet you where they drop off the deportees in Tijuana” (142; ch. 15). Atomiko stays strong, and eventually meets back up with the girls, and it seems as if he has super powers. He refrains from acting scared also, but I think when he is separated from the group, that he gets scared inside, just slightly. Towards the end of the journey, Nayeli isn’t sure if she wants to take him back to Tres Camarones, and his emotions start to reveal as he tries to convince
