Into the Wild by John Krakauer is a book about Chris McCandless and his journey in the wild. He was a smart person, but lacked certain survival skills. I believe he would have been alive if he had been more careful and studied more about wilderness survival. Chris McCandless went into the wild because he wasn’t satisfied with his life at home. He had a very privileged background and was doing great in school. Then he decided he was tired of it and left a life many people wish they could have. He abandoned his family so he could be happy living off the land, but in the end living off the land is what killed him. He had a book that described plants and their effects on the human body. However, Chris didn’t read it carefully enough, and he ate a poisonous plant that looked similar to another safe plant. It was a careless mistake that cost him his life. He went on a journey to discover himself and felt like he had it all figured out. He thought he could just go out into the world by himself and survive with no help. Who knows whether the reason he survived so long was due to luck or actual skill and knowledge. He could have died in the flash flood and we wouldn't have known about his story. All the events that occurred would have been different if the circumstances changed. He may have just been lucky the whole time and his luck ran out at the wrong time.
