All animals require a food source to survive, where and when they get their food is determined on availability and natural selection. Flat periwinkle snails are small marine snail that is part of the “Littorinidae” family. They are typically found on seaweed that grows off the shores of New England (Britannica). Predators bring out the best traits in a species which helps future generations. Periwinkle snails have several predators, but one of the main ones it the green crab. The green crab is not native to North America, instead it was introduced during the 1800’s via ships arriving at Cape Cod from Europe (Washington Dep.). These crabs have caused many problems, they rapidly spread and they are theorized to have caused the major decline in “soft shell fishery”. This experiment was used to study and understand the impact green crabs have on the periwinkle snail population as well as observe any evolutionary traits that are carried onto the next generation. These snails have only one line of defense against the crabs—their shells. Biologist Robin Seeley discovered this rapid morphological transition by comparing a museum shell collection from 1871 to shells she collected from the same area. Her study shows how rapidly the periwinkle snails evolved. Seeley’s work demonstrated that prior to the green crabs arriving in North America, periwinkle snails’ shell thickness averaged out as “thin” with the majority of the population having the same shell thickness. Her work later showed that after green crabs were introduced shell thickness rapidly changed. In about 80 years, shell thickness double with the population having a wide range of thickness (Seeley).
Evolution is defined as; “change in the gene pool of a population from generation to generation by such processes as mutation, natural selection, and genetic drift”, while Natural Selection is defines as; “the process by which forms of life having traits that better enable them to adapt to specific environmental pressures, as predators, changes in climate, or competition for food or mates, will tend to survive and reproduce in greater numbers than others of their kind, thus ensuring the perpetuation of those favorable traits in succeeding generations..” (Dictionary.com). Both Evolution and Natural Selection work together to bring out the genes required by a species to survive and reproduce. For natural selection to occur, four things are required. 1) Reproduction, 2) Heredity, 3) Variation, 4) Variation (Ridley). If all four of these are met properly for a species, natural selection will occur. Knowing all of this, I predict that with a large population, and through several generations, the periwinkle snails will develop thicker shells to better survive against the green crabs.

The flat periwinkle is a small snail that lives on seaweeds growing on rocky shores in New England. Among the snail’s enemies is the European green crab. As its name suggests, the European green crab is not native to North America. It traveled from Europe early in the 19th century. Before 1900, the green crab did not occur north of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. After the turn of the century, however, the crab expanded its range northward, and is now found as far north as Nova Scotia. The crab’s range expansion introduced periwinkle populations north of Cape Cod to a new predator.…

Evolution is basically the change in the heritable characteristic or traits in living organisms which are passed from one generation to another and gives rise to diversity at every stage of the organism’s biological organisation. The process of evolution was not well understood until 19th century when Charles Darwin proposed the scientific theory of natural selection as a driving tool in evolution. The process involved both the macroevolution in which organisms went through major evolutionary changes over a long period of time and acquired different traits from different parents or ancestries and the microevolution in which a group of organisms went through minimal changes with time but the traits they acquired were typically from the same ancestor.…

The economic contraction in the 1930s, propelled by the collapse of the economies in industrialised states, had a ripple effect on the small vulnerable economies of the Caribbean. During the 1930s, the region started to experience economic recessions due to a decline in exports. The repercussions were even greater for those countries locked into monocrop production and dependent on the trade relations that existed between them and the developed countries of Europe and the U.S. The Caribbean countries had become so dependent on the foreign markets that from the onset of the Depression they suffered many of the symptoms experienced by industrialised countries. Between 1928 and 1933 the prices of West Indian exports were on average almost halved, which contributed to; forced wage reductions, increased taxation and unemployment.…

A. It seems as though every teenager in today's age is always looking for love, relationships. As a freshman in a university and as a person that has spent almost 17 years of my life in the public school system, I can confidently make that statement. Although not everyone is looking for it, but approximately 85% percent of kids and/or teens are. It has always made me wonder, "Why is everyone in need of a boyfriend/girlfriend? Is it really required as you grow up?” Some would answer that question “yes” because it is part of your life as you grow up, they would say that it would make you mature. But there are still few that have the opposite perspective as others, they believe that it is not really required, because anyone can be happy even without having a relationship with the opposite sex. So, what are the reasons and/or causes of a teenager having a relationship?…
