It has been said that purpose of information systems is to get the right information to the right people at the right time in the right amount and in the right format. Because information systems are intended to supply useful information, we begin by defining information and two closely related terms, data and knowledge.
One of the primary goals of information systems is to economically process data into information and knowledge. Data items refer to an elementary description of things, events, activities and transactions that are recorded, classified and stored but not organized to convey any specific meaning. It can be numbers, letters, figures, sounds or images. Information refers to data that have been organized so that they have meaning and value to the recipient. Lastly, knowledge consists of data and/or information that have been organized and processed to convey understanding, experience, accumulated learning and expertise as they apply to a current business problem.
Information Systems are important for a variety of reasons. First, information systems and information technologies are integral to life. Second, the IS field offers many career opportunities. Finally, all functional areas in an organization utilize information systems. (Rainer & Cegielski., 2011)
