There is a law in the state of Rhode Island called “The Safe Haven for Infants Act”. This law requires every hospital, medical emergency facility, fire station, or police station to take temporary custody of an infant who appears to be 30 days or younger, who is voluntarily left at the facility. All people working with children are governed by legislation that is in place to protect your children and the child care provider. In this document I have listed four important legislations that are of particular importance to home based child care providers and noted how I aim to incorporate them into my practice. Child care practitioners also have a regulatory body; in England it is Ofsted. This document gives you a brief description of their supervisory role in child care settings. However, the list of legislation is not comprehensive and nor is the short description of Ofsted’s Role, if you would like more information or would like to discuss anything written in this leaflet, please ask and I would be happy to provide you as a parent with more details.…

Have you ever known the psychological thought of slavery? Well, if not then you’re not alone. Growing up, all throughout elementary, middle, and high school I was taught the basic things about slavery, but not the psychological understandings. When I read this book by Na’im Akbar, I was beginning to understand what was happening in those slavery days. The author’s views upon slavery were very similar to mine, but I enjoyed reading the book.…

One of most important benefits is developing socialization skills. In daycare, the child develops his or her socialization skills through interaction with other children. The child learns how to make friends, how to solve the conflicts, and how to take a stand in the group. These are very important skills, which help the child relate with others in future. However, at home the child interacts only with parents and it is absolutely different than interactions with children of his or her age. The parents are usually authorities for their child, so the child cannot really gain the skills of making friends or taking a stand in the group.…

With the successes of welfare reform and the high turnout of female college graduates mothers are increasingly, entering the workforce. As affirmed by the Wilson Quarterly (Autumn 98, Vol. 22 Issue 4), "Ben Wildavsky, a staff correspondent for the National Journal (Jan. 24, 1998), provides statistical background. In 1997, nearly 42 percent of women with children under six were working full-time, 5 percent were looking for work, 18 percent had part-time jobs, and 35 percent were not working outside the home" (p.115). Using these figures it is said that 65 percent of women with children aged younger than six are working or would like to be. Daycare is a necessity for the majority of working American mothers.…

55% of American mothers now return to work by the time their children are one years old -- out of either financial, professional, or personal necessity. In today’s society, there are concerns as to whether attending daycare during infancy produces negative or positive effects on the development of children. Many of these concerns are influenced by the fear that separating an infant from its mother may cause emotional harm to the child or disrupt the mother-infant bond. No study finds that children of employed mothers suffer solely because their mothers are working. Research has shown that mothers who work spend as much time playing with their babies as do mothers without outside jobs (Huston & Aronson, 2005). It has also been questioned as to whether home-based maternal care or nonrelatives day-care provide the child with more opportunity to develop cognitively and socially (Belsky and Steinberg 1978, Field 1991, Lamb 1996, Peisner-Feinberg et al. 2001).…
