“Tourism is the temporary movement of people to destinations outside their normal place of work and residence.”The word tourism was originated from the word ‘tour’ which is closely associated with the idea of a voyage or circuit, then with the idea of an individual being temporarily away from home for pleasure purpose, which is a significant feature of the world today. The definition of tourism given by the Swizz Professor Hunziker & Krapt is considered to be universally acceptable & was adopted by the international Association of scientific Experts in Tourism (AIEST)
The United Nationals statistical Commission has accepted the following definition of tourism on the recommendation of the world Tourism Organization (WTO). It states that tourism comprises the activities of persons traveling to & staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business & other purposes (WTO, 1993)
The league of nation defines a tourist as a person stay in a foreign country for more than 24 hours and less than 6 months. A domestic tourist is one who travels within the country where he resides to a place other than his usual place of residence for at least 24 hours or one night. The tourism based on motive may be classified into:-
• Leisure/Recreation Tourism
• Cultural
• Pilgrimage Tourism
• Interpersonal relationship
• Sports/Adventure
• Health Tourism
• Business Tourism
The tourist places should be so attractive that in should pull the non residential. The local transports play very active role in domestic tourism. Another main need is the
