Introduction to Executive Tools for Decision Making
For this case assignment, I have chosen three publicly traded companies with at least one company that deals with a product and at least one company that deals with a service.
The three companies I decided to use are; Wal-Mart Stores, Target Stores and the Verizon Wireless Company.
The first company’s finances I will explore is Wal-Mart. Net sales increased 13.2% to $354.0 billion in fiscal 2012, and income from continuing operations increased 7.7% to $14.1 billion. Foreign currency exchange rates favorably impacted sales and operating income by $1.9 billion and $93 million, respectively, in fiscal 2012. Net cash provided by operating activities of continuing operations was $23.6 billion for fiscal 2012. During fiscal 2012, Wal-Mart paid $2.3 billion in cash to repurchase their common stock and paid dividends of $2.8 billion.
Additionally during fiscal 2012, they issued $8.5 billion in long-term debt, repaid $4.2 billion of long-term debt and funded a decrease in commercial paper of $1.6 billion (net of issuances).
Total assets increased 9.4%, to $151.2 billion at January 31, 2012, when compared to January 31, 2011. During fiscal 2012, they made $15.7 billion of capital expenditures which was an increase of 7.8% over capital expenditures of $14.5 billion in fiscal 2011. When compared to fiscal 2011, our Wal-Mart Stores segment experienced an 11.1% increase in operating income and a 7.8% increase in net sales in fiscal 2012.
Sam’s Club’s continued focus on the needs of each individual member helped drive a 9.2% increase in operating income on a 4.5% increase in net sales when comparing fiscal 2012 with fiscal 2011. Wal-Mart’s
