LECTURER:
On 29th of October, 2014, as a Mechanical Engineering student whom took the Engineering in Society (EiS) course, we are required to attend a talk program that had been organized by faculty. The talk is organized to give exposure and knowledge to student about the organization called IEM. The speech was given by Ir Dr Cheong Thiam Fook who are the Chairman of the Membership Drive in IEM. Institution of Engineers Malaysia (EIM) is a professional learned society for the aspiring the engineering students and practicing engineers to work together for the betterment of the engineering profession. The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) was established in 1959 and its primary function is to promote and advance the science and profession of engineering in any or all of its disciplines and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas related to engineering. The governing body of the IEM is the Council, headed by the President. The affairs of the Council are carried out by the Executive Committee comprising the President, Deputy President, seven Vice Presidents, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer and five members elected from the Council. Operations are supported by a full time Secretariat. Membership of the Institution is currently about 27,000 and the growth rate is about 10% per annum making it one of the largest professional organization in the country. In order to support the needs of members, the IEM has 8 Standing Committees to attend to the different administrative functions of the Institution.
To support the multidisciplinary needs of engineering practice, there are 18 Technical Divisions and 3 Special Interest Groups to look after and to organize activities for the different disciplines. There is also a Graduate and Student Section that caters exclusively to the younger members. Today, the IEM are having the branches all over Malaysia including the east of Malaysia.
The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia aims to be the premier professional organization pivotal achieving Vision 2020 with several missions for example promoting the sound professional engineering practice in support of the social-economic development objectives of the nation. EIM also shall service the needs and interests of its members and the public and uphold the social standing image of the engineering profession. Besides, IEM shall contribute towards nation building and shall strive to enhance society’s consciousness of science and technology. The main objectives of the Institution as set out in the Constitution is to hold meetings, exhibitions and visits, and such other activities as The Institution may deem incidental or conducive to the promotion or attainment of the profession of engineer. This institution objected to raise the character and status and advance the interests of the profession of engineering and those engaged there in and to promote the honorable practice and professional etiquette among members of The Institution.
Over and above, the objectives of the institution are to communicate to members information on all matters affecting the profession of engineering and to print, publish, issue and circulate such publications as may seem conducive to any of the objectives of the Institution and to do such other things as the Institution may think incidental or conducive to the attainment of the objectives of The Institution. Institution of Engineering Malaysia (IEM) is a society established to promote and advance the Science and Profession of Engineering in any or all its disciplines and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas related to Engineering.
IEM management structure is basically divided into 3 division includes the standing committee, technical division and graduated and students. There were several types of memberships within IEM includes student member, graduate member, corporate or fellow member, associate member, incorporated member and the honorary member. The student membership is open to all engineering student includes mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, and electrical engineering student. The membership grades for student member is about 12,000. A student member shall be a person who in respect to his educational attainments, complies with the relevant Bylaws and Regulations. For graduate member, IEM has open the membership to all practicing engineers that registered with BEM. The grades for graduates member is about 8,000. A Graduate Member shall be a person who in respect to his age, his educational attainments and his practical training, complies with the relevant Bylaws and Regulations. The function for corporate or fellow member is to upgrading for the experience engineers leading to Professional Engineer status. There shall be no direct admission to this grade. Admission shall only be by transfer from the grade of Member. To be eligible for transfer to the grade of Fellow, a Member shall have satisfied the Council that he is worthy of transfer to this grade in accordance with the relevant Bylaws and Regulations. Membership grades for corporate or fellow members is about 900. Meanwhile the associate member is for the non-degree engineering practitioner, diploma or to the certificate holder. An Associate Member shall be a person who, in respect to his educational attainments and his practical training, complies with the relevant Bylaws and Regulations.
The Professional Engineers from international Engineering Institution that recognized by IEM is categorized as the Incorporated members. For the Incorporated members, the membership grade is about 20 only. Based on the IEM’s constitution, an Incorporated Member shall be a person who in respect to his educational attainments and his practical training, complies with the relevant Bylaws and Regulations. An Honorary Member shall be a non–corporate member of acknowledged eminence who has rendered outstanding services to the engineering profession, The Institution and the Nation.
There were a lots of benefits in joining the IEM. As an IEM Student Member, the student can make a lot of networking with the practicing engineers. So that, they can easily exposed to the real working experience and be prepared for work after graduated. The other benefit is the student can attend the Technical Talks, Courses and Technical Visits that been organized by IEM. Through this programs, student will be improve their technical skills as a process for self-prepare before entering the working world. As an IEM members, this institution helps engineer to enhance their networking amongst the engineer. Thus, it will increase the job vacancy and they can share their idea or knowledge through this network. IEM also known as a provider of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program for MIEM/PE.
As an engineering practices, we should know and have the understanding between the roles of IEM and BEM. Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) is a regulatory body for engineering practices in Malaysia that had been set-up under the Registration of Engineers Act. 1967. All engineering practitioner must register with BEM within 6 months of practice. Meanwhile the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) is learned institution for practicing engineers in Malaysia networking, technical learning and social networking.
