WHAT IS A MODEL???
“A Representation of an object, a system, or an idea in some form other than that of the entity itself.” (Shannon)
INGREDIENTS OF A GOOD MODEL
A model is similar to but simpler than the system it represents. One purpose of a model is to enable the analyst to predict the effect of changes to the system.
A model should be a close approximation to the real system and incorporate most of its salient features.
A model should not be so complex that it is impossible to understand and experiment with it.
A good model is a judicious tradeoff between realism and simplicity.
A good model can be validated.

MODELING
Modeling
is
the process of producing a model; a model is a representation of the construction and working of some system of interest.
PROCESS IN DESIGNING A MODEL
Start at the end
Problem orientation
Model simple; think complicated
Start small: and add
Avoid mega models
Let the model decide the input

SIMULATION
A
technique or set of techniques whereby, the development of models helps one to understand the behavior of a system, real or hypothetical.
OBJECTIVES OF SIMULATION
To obtain insight into the system's behavior or to assist in solving the decision problem.
Testing for Safety.
Option Testing.
To reduce Design Cost by avoiding Trial and Error situation. 4
