In comparing Osi models to non-Osi models I chose to discuss the FCAPS model. The acronym FCAPS stands for the five layers it is comprised of;
1. Fault management- network faults or problems are found and fixed. Potential problems are identified and addressed thus preventing them from reoccurring in the future. This minimizes downtime and potential costs.
2. Configuration management- The network is controlled and monitored from a central location often known as the “network operations center”. This networking function provides the ability to identify, collect data from and provide control over network functions.
3. Accounting management- resources are distributed and the departments are held responsible for the users network use. This helps in providing support to determine the charges a company might see in using a network.
4. Performance management- reduces network congestion and the common bottlenecking often found in networks. This is also useful in collecting data that would determine performance goals and what is not needed in the network.
5. Security management- only those who need access to the network are permitted to use its resources, security applies to both outside and inside intruders. This type of service is important in determining who needs to be in the network and who doesn’t.
The OSI model has seven layers and it is designed to provide service from one layer to the next layer, where the FCAPS model is more isolated and each layer can operate independently from the other layers. (etutorials, 2012)
The FCAPS is an extension of the more popular network management conceptual frameworks named Telecommunication Management Network or (TMN), it describes network management in four layers. Each layer of the TMN must perform some or all of the FCAPS functions in a certain criteria. Many network management protocols address
