When going into a new work stating duties can vary depending on what age group you work with for example babies where you will need skills in baby care or pre-school providing age appropriate activities for 3-5 year olds.
For example if you were to go into a work setting working with babies age between 0-2 the skills you may need to posses are as follows: • Knowledge of child development • Ability to engage with parents • Work as part of a small team • Understand physical care needs of babies • Knowledge of feeding and waning young children • Provide toys and activities suitable for babies • Experience of nappy changing and bottle feeding babies and infants. • Identify standards that influence the way your role is carried out.
In early years settings there are certain standards that you have to follow whilst working with children, this is why in the setting we have policies and procedures that influence the way that we work. We must follow these policies and procedures and make sure that we take them seriously as they are there for the welfare of staff and children.
There are standards that influence our role such as: • Codes of practice, such as internal policies and procedures of setting • Regulations, such as the Health and Safety at work act, Children Act 2004 • National Minimum Standards, such as EYFS welfare requirements • National Occupational Standards, such as Sector Standards used to develop qualifications and courses.
As employees we have a responsibility in ensuring we follow the required standards. Managers will make sure they keep employees up to date on any changes that take place on policies and procedures and we must also check over them every few
