Introduction to Taboo
Taboos is the belief that ancient Malay society related to customs and ancestral culture. Taboos is something that prevents us from doing something because there are disadvantages if taking. It is usually practiced by the old people among the Malays, Chinese and Indians. Many taboos hereditary revealed through advice. The importance of taboos as a legacy to be followed has been expressed through the adage "Biar mati anak, jangan mati adat."
Each taboo imposed by the elders is to educate the public especially the younger generation in order to inculcate good values that can be practiced in life. Some taboos have become a practice or principle of life today. Most of the taboos laid down is intended to benefit all people, for example taboos during the marriage, the festive season and also during pregnancy. In fact, taboos is handed down by our ancestors in order for the younger generation to take care of themselves so that they may stay healthy and fit.
Although the Malays, Chinese and Indians have taboos during the marriage, celebration and during pregnancy, but the restrictions adopted by each of the races are different. This shows the diverse ethnic Malaysia.
Definition of Taboo
A taboo is a vehement prohibition of an action based on the belief that such behaviour is either too sacred or too accursed for ordinary individuals to undertake, under threat of supernatural punishment. Such prohibitions are present in virtually all societies. The word has been somewhat expanded in the social sciences to include strong prohibitions relating to any area of human activity or custom that is sacred or forbidden based on moral judgment and religious beliefs. "Breaking a taboo" is usually considered objectionable by society in general, not merely a subset of a culture.
Taboos in Malay Community Nowadays
Nowadays, the Malay community is no longer actively practicing taboos. When they found out that the taboos created solely to
