In our current society, items such as drugs and weapons appear commonly on teenage programs like TV shows and movies. Here they are often portrayed as things that are “normal” or
“ordinary.” For this reason, high school teachers are becoming more and more concerned about the possibility of their students’ possession of such items, which are considered illegal in the
United States. So the solution some of these teachers have decided on was to conduct random searches of student lockers to ensure student safety. This solution they’ve come up with, however, is actually full of problems. For one thing, it’s a huge invasion of privacy and second, it can cause problems between students and teachers.
The biggest, and most obvious reason why random locker searches are such a bad idea is because it invades the privacy of students. Imagine standing at your locker handling some personal items, when suddenly a teacher suddenly appears right next to you and begins searching through your personal belongings. You definitely wouldn’t be feeling very good because someone had just gone through your stuff without even asking! High school students need their privacy; they are going through many changes and are at the age of experiencing different things.
Although random locker searches may be effective because unaware students can be caught during any time, they are not the best way for teachers to monitor their students.
Secondly, random locker searches may lead to problems between students and teachers.
The reason for this is because the students, having to have their lockers checked for illegal items, may feel that their teachers do not trust them. While guilty students may be caught, the innocent students are left behind to think that they are untrustworthy. This can create even more problem, this time the problem being the student-teacher relationship.
