Another way the steam engine further advanced the development of the American society was through the powering of ships and locomotives. They also paved the way for railroads. Before steam engines, the fastest way of transportation was through horses and wagons, and these new engines lessened the time it took to get around. In light of the new job openings available, many families who previously had little to no source of income were able to make money for the upkeep of the household and their families. This increase in jobs allowed many families in the lower class to move up to the middle class, and people of the middle class to move into the upper class. Despite many beliefs, uneducated non-elite people made the most contributions to the progress of the Industrial Revolution. A great number of the many new inventions were thought of by people of no importance. These people helped inspire others to make changes within the world also.
