RATE OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS.
Introduction Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction which takes place inside the green plants (plants with chlorophyll, a pigment found in chloroplasts which causes the colour of the plants and it is the main photosynthetic pigment) and light energy is converted into chemical energy. Carbon dioxide, water and sunlight is transformed into sugar an oxygen, which later will be used as energy for the plant. The chemical equation of photosynthesis is:
Photosynthesis takes place principally in the leaves and it can be divide into two phases: the light dependent reactions and light independent reactions.
When we talk about the rate of photosynthesis we refer of how fast photosynthesis takes place. This rate can be affected by three main factors: temperature, the quantity of Carbon Dioxide or the light intensity.
Research question: How does the light intensity affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Hypothesis: as the light intensity increases the rate of photosynthesis will increase since the light dependent reactions will produce quicker, but at certain point the rate will become stable, without more increasing, because of other limiting factors needed in the reaction as temperature or CO_2.
Variables:
Independent variable: light intensity. Dependent variable: rate of photosynthesis. Controlled variables: temperature, Carbon Dioxide, quantity of water in the beakers, distance between the beakers and the light each time, the length of the piece of elodea.
Materials Ruler Timer. Elodea. Thin and long beaker and another one shorter (just a couple of centimetres) but wither. Water. Light.
Method Put the small beaker inside the bigger beaker and full both of the beakers with water. Put the ruler close to the bigger beaker and place the light at 30 cm of the big beaker. Place a piece of elodea (±6 cm long) inside the small beaker. Start the timer and count how many bubbles are released during one minute. Repeat the experiment but changing the distance of the light (25, 20, 15, 10 and 5 cm of distance). Make a table and a graph with the results obtained. It is needed to change the piece of elodea each time that the experiment is repeated.
