Investigating the
Introduction to Amino Acids and Protein Molecules

In the following tutorial you are going to

- View molecules with the help of molecular visualization software (Jmol)
- Get an introduction to amino acids and protein molecules
- Model amino acids and dipeptides with molecule kits
- Use a data base (PDB) to view protein molecules (hemoglobin and myoglobin)
- Inform yourself about sickle-cell-anemia

To use all following links properly JAVA has to be enabled on your computer!
Where appropriate you may answer the assignments/questions asked directly into this tutorial and print it out later!
Do not just use your computer and the links. Also use your book to answer the assignments.

Use the following link to get an introduction do molecule viewing/modelling: http://www.bluffton.edu/~bergerd/classes/jmol.html Work yourself through the tutorial to understand how Jmol works and what you can do with it. On page 6 of the tutorial only the first part of the tutorial is finished. Please go on choosing “protein structure”.

When you are finished, click on the following link: http://www.biotopics.co.uk/JmolApplet/jcontentstable.html Go to amino acids: Click on glycine, the simplest amino acid

1. Identify which atoms make up a functional group called the amino group (basic)
NH2
2. Identify which atoms make up a functional group called the carboxyl group (acidic)
COOH
3. Identify which atoms make up a functional group called the R-group or residue- group
'R' group is a hydrogen
4. Use your book and make a drawing of the structural formula of the molecule.
--Make a model of the molecule using the chemistry model kit provided
