DEDICATION

I would like to dedicate this work to my guardians, Mr. Sylifano N. Tindi and Mrs. Nelly N. Nambuchi, who have encouraged me throughout my education life. Without them I would not be where I am and also I would not be who I am.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

First and foremost, I wish to offer my greatest gratitude to the Lord God Almighty for having kept me alive and healthy throughout the college life. He has been the solemn protector and provider whenever I have needed him.

I wish to start by thanking the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology and particularly Civil and Structural Engineering department for taking me through the civil and structural engineering program up to the level I have reached. I wish to appreciate for what all the lecturers in and

The compressive, flexural, and tensile tests were performed several times with the concrete samples at an age of 7 days old and 28 days old to improve the accuracy of the results. The compressive, flexural, and tensile strength values were calculated and then averaged. The average compressive, flexural and tensile strength of the different concrete mixtures are shown in Table 1.…

The current rapid development in India has created a large demand for construction for years to come, requiring increased production of cast-in-place concrete and concrete products. These will be essential to major infrastructure construction projects such as transportation (roads, bridges, airports), water distribution (embankments and water channels), energy development (nuclear power generation), and for buildings in general. Typically, conventional concrete is made of fine and coarse aggregates, water, Portland cement and chemical admixtures. Portland cement based composites have high potential for strength which are not utilized gainfully in the actual practice. Moreover, it has been conceded that the concrete is the largest man-made material of construction. To make the concrete more eco-friendly, its energy content should be reduced, its long-term durability superior and the ingredients environment-friendly. Therefore, it is essential to introduce new technologies and practices for alternative cement and concrete compositions in order to curtail the rising environmental problems caused by increased Portland cement production. Furthermore, these new technologies will slow down the depletion of…

The object of this review is to throw light on the paper : “Influence of nano- SiO2 on the Portland cement pastes” . This paper was written by M.Stefanidou and I. Papayianni. The paper is based on the research conducted by them on high strength cement pastes which were infused with nano-SiO2 at different percentages (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 5%). These nano-SiO2 particles which were produced by pyrolysis have known to actually improve the properties of cement pastes thereby increasing their performance. From the research based on a number of tests , the authors came to the conclusion that the nano-SiO2 appear to affect the mechanical properties and the structure of high strength cement pastes even in minute concentrations. This research can therefore be considered as a continuation of testing nano particles in cement mixtures by increasing the packing factor or increase the hydration rate in the process of cement hydration.…

ratio but this workability is sometimes lost rapidly in the first hour after contact between the cement and water. This is especially the case for naphthalene-based and melamine-based superplasticizers when used with the so called incompatible cements. It is possible to reasonably predict the rheological behavior of a given Portland cement when used with a naphthalene-based superplasticizer once the physico-chemical composition and the properties of the clinker, of the cement, and of the superplasticizer are known. Different Portland cements, having a wide range of C3A contents (6.0 to 11.8%) and SO3 contents (0.09 to 2.90%), made with clinkers having a wide range of alkali contents (0.07 to 0.87% of Na2Oeq), have been selected to highlight the key cement factors that control the compatibility between ordinary Portland cements and the naphthalene-based superplasticizers. The soluble alkalis (in fact the soluble SO4 2- ions from alkalis), the fineness, the C3A content, and the type of CaSO4 of the cement are among the key cement factors that control the rheological behavior of a superplasicized cement paste and concrete. An optimum amount of soluble alkalis content exists and ranges between 0.4 and 0.6% of Na2Oeq in the cement. The rate of the naphthalene based superplasticizers’ adsorption on the cement particles and cement hydrates, which is influenced by these parameters, controls the loss of fluidity of the concrete. Moreover, this study has shown that concrete made with cements that have a low soluble alkali content not only lose their slump when under dosed in super plasticizer but also present severe segregation and bleeding when the dosage of the super plasticizer is slightly higher than the saturation point. In…

In brick-making terms, clay covers a range of naturally occurring raw materials which are used to make a product. The clays vary considerably in physical properties, colour, hardness etc, and mineralogical content. They do, however, have certain properties in common. They have the ability to be crushed and mixed with water to form a plastic material which can be moulded into various shapes. This can then be fired to a high temperature during which process it attains a hard, weather resistant characteristic. The key, in geological terms, is the mineral content of…

Concrete is the most commonly used construction material; its usage by the communities across the globe is second only to water. Customarily, concrete is produced by using the Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) as the binder. The usage of OPC is on the increase to meet infrastructure developments. The world-wide demand for OPC would increase further in the future. It is well-known that cement production depletes significant amount of natural resources and releases large volumes of carbon-dioxide. Cement production is also highly energy-intensive, after steel and aluminium. On the other hand, coalburning power generation plants produce huge quantities of fly ash. The volume of fly ash would increase as the demand for power increases. Most of the fly ash is considered as waste and dumped in landfills.…
