I didn’t know what happened but all I know was that I was attacked from behind. I walked down my block and went inside my house, my mom was in the kitchen fixing dinner and my dad was on the couch watching his favorite show (Soap). My dad said “Hey where were you, you were suppose too be home 10 minutes ago”. He turned to face the door but no one was there. “I’m sorry I’m late, my friend Samantha wanted me to walk her to the store”, I said.
My dad called my mom in and I asked “What are you staring at it’s me Kayla”. My mom screamed to the top of her lungs, I told them to relax and I explained to them what happened. Once I explained, they were shocked and surprised. “I was invisible and mow I can do whatever I want.” I said. I went to the store and scared some lady that was in front of me, I brought some chips and the guy at the counter got scared and said just to go, so I didn’t even pay. I was a great day. Until the next day came. I was visible. My mom came up to my room and was so happy that she could see me. I was also happy as well.

My mom came up the stairs to see me in my neighbors arms, my neighbor standing outside the screen door. She had said she thought about calling the cops but luckily she didn't. My mom didn’t even know I had left my room because I had been napping. She was really scared that something like that would happen again but the outcome could be different if nobody we knew would be outside, so she bought a security system so if it were to happen again she would know.…

It was March 14, 2013, but I remember it like it was yesterday. Two weeks earlier, I hung up my navy-blue patrol uniform for a chance to go work narcotics with the big boys at the DEA. In just thirteen days I had seen enough cocaine to make Tony Montana envious, and was involved in an undercover operation which resulted in the arrest of a dirty cop. It was like being in a movie, and March 14, 2013, was no different.…

It was unusually cold on this morning of September 11th, 2001, and my alarm had just went off. The odd but needed 5 am. was when I woke up, because my flight was going to leave around 8:30 and I needed to be there on time. The reason I was flying to San Francisco was I was having a family reunion with my dad, my step-mom, and my step-brothers. So, I jumped in the shower quickly with joy and excitement. I hadn't seen my family in forever since I had gotten a job as the assistant of the manager in Ralph Lauren Headquarters. I had just gotten my hair dried as I heard my phone ring. It was dad, making sure that I was on my way. I talked to him for a few minutes and then hung up. I glanced at the clock and realized…

I remember the night my dad left like it was yesterday, and I don’t think I will ever forget. I don’t remember what exactly it was that made him so mad but I’m sure my sister and I were fighting like sisters do. My only really vivid memory of that night was my dad hitting me so hard he left bruise marks on my backside. I could hear my mom and dad fighting so I knew my mom saved me again. Then my dad got really mad at her and he grabbed her by the shoulders and shoved her into the pantry door so hard that both my mom and the pantry door came crashing to the floor. When I got up for school the next morning my dad was gone. Some children aren’t as lucky though and Child Protective Services has to remove them from a bad situation.…

I was standing in front of the North Pool of 9/11 Memorial with my friends. A blurry animation of a moment was forming in my memory. I was thrown back to Tehran, Iran, 2001 when I was an Afghan refugee escaping from a massacre by the hands of Taliban from being a Hazara - an ethnic minority. I saw the Twin Towers on a black and white TV. I saw how they collapsed and disappeared in the dust. The magnitude of the collapse took me back to July 2015. I was struggling to make a bigger picture of my identity in my mind.…

Friday, October 24th was the day I almost died. I got in a life-threatening car accident. My seatbelt saved my life. If I didn’t have my seatbelt on when I wrecked I would be dead even with medical attention. I swerved to prevent a wreck between the black suv, the other car involved in the accident at fault, and myself by swerving. Swerving may not have been the best idea because I lost control of the car and ended up, upside down in a ditch with a completely missing window, a caved in roof that would have collapsed on my head if I was a tiny bit taller, a cracked all over windshield, a demolished side mirror barley attached to the car, a lot of dents, out of place tires, bits of glass inside the car, and broken inside mirrors.…

My mom never screamed at me before and when she screamed he blamed me for letting him go outside without his permission. One sunny day, we were remodeling the living room so it can be more babyproof now that my brother was taller and could walk and run perfectly. We left the door open because it was too cold in the living room. We were moving the couch as we told Andres to move over so we don’t locate the couch on his feet. We were so busy moving the furniture that we totally forgot the baby of the family was walking towards the door. When we put the couch in our desired spot, we noticed Andres walking toward the street. We ran after him as quickly as we could as we saw a car moving in Andres’s direction. My dad sprinted like a track and field athlete towards his baby and caught him right in time. All of a sudden, my mom turned to me and blamed me for this incident. I felt like my side of the story wasn’t considered when I explained she told me to help her with the couch and it was really Andres’s fault. She couldn’t believe I was blaming a baby so she sent me to my room. I ran to my room crying, feeling as if Andres was the favorite child and I wished that I never had a…

That was the day that my grandpa passed away. Every single part of that date is engrained in my memory. My parents had driven up to Wisconsin, and my older sister Lauren drove home for college to stay with me. It wasn’t out of the normal for my parents to quickly leave, so I didn’t think much of it. I remember going to hang out with Tatum, my best friend of the time. It was a nice day outside, so of course we were outside playing on the trampoline and doing all our weird routines like we always did. Her family, who was like a second family to me, decided to go out to eat so they brought me along. We went to La Charitas. I remember how Mrs. Teeple pulled out a funny card game for us to play, and I remember Tatum cutting out faces in her tortilla, making us all laugh. When we got back to the house we saw that my sister called, so I said bye to the Teeples and walked one minute down the road to my house. Lauren, who is one of the most emotional in the family, was left with the task of telling me that my grandpa had passed away. I had just grabbed a snack of chocolate cheerios as she started to tell me the news. I didn’t know how to react, so I ran into the basement directly to the furthest corner I could find. Lauren tried talking to me, but I wanted to be by myself. One of the hardest things I have ever done was talking to my dad on the phone after finding out. He called to tell me the plans, that he was coming home to get us, and…

I was face first against the wall, held by my arms by lackeys of the resident bully. I had gotten myself into this position on my own, and expected no help from other kids or the staff. My name is James, I am 15 years old and I live in an orphanage. This had been my life for the past 7 years and I did not know much else. I had an aptitude for making trouble and it usually got me beaten up, or grounded. This time I had humiliated the poor boy by reading his personal diary to the rest of the lunch hall… Apparently, this was not a good choice, and now I was here. After he had hit me a few times, he made an unintelligible noise that apparently meant throw me on the ground, as this is exactly what happened. Before I knew it I was lying face up on the floor, being repeatedly kicked by the three boys. The first couple of seconds, I wasn’t worried. This was normal for me. But after that, I began to worry. I was scared. They had never beat me this bad, kicked me so hard. The pain was unbearable. Eventually they must have gotten bored because the kicking had stopped, but the pain was still there. I felt sick. It hurt to move. All I could think of was my bed. After waiting a few minutes, I had the strength to crawl up the stairs and into the building of which this lovely home of mine was built. I reached the staircase leading to the first floor and reached for the hand rail. Pulling myself up with its help, I scaled the stairs. One by one. Every step felt like someone was stabbing me in the chest. I came to the conclusion that I had broken a rib, but was so exhausted, didn’t think of reporting it. I got into the hallway and luckily for me my room was directly in front of me. Stumbling through the door, I slammed it and locked it straight away, convinced I wasn’t leaving again. This was my second mistake. I stripped off, clambered into bed and before you could say sleep, I was snoring. This is where my life changed. Forever.…
