The characteristics of African American literature are mostly written by authors of African American decent. The setting usually takes place after slavery and during the black segregation time periods. The book meets up with genre by taking place during the racial era of the United States and the book was written by an African American author.
Setting:
Harlem, New York during the 1930’s. The tone of the book is mostly optimistic, which comes from the narrator. The atmosphere in the beginning is tense, but as the book goes on the tensions lessen as the protagonist starts to become invisible. …show more content…
Characters of the story: The main character is an unnamed African American man or “Invisible Man” because he believes people do not see him because he is black.
Summary:
Invisible man wanted to live like any normal human being in the world, but he soon faces the about racism and his almost “invisible” identity, so racial tensions build up and he gets caught up in a riot, then he gets driven into a manhole which drives him to write a story about his invisibility. Theme:
Ideology is a limitation to human possibilities.

The narrator begins the book with this quote, which will lead to the story of how he became invisible.
"Live with your head in the lion's mouth. I want you to overcome 'em with yeses, undermine 'em with grins, agree 'em to death and destruction, let 'em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open." Pg 16
The main character lives by the words of his grandfather throughout the book

The quote foreshadows the possible idea of invisibility that the main character will soon discover on his own
Three symbols/ motifs:
Blindness is a motif that appears throughout the book, people around the narrator steer clear of seeing and challenge the truth of racism.
Invisibility is an obvious motif throughout the story as well, the protagonist becomes invisible because the people around him choose to be blind which brings him freedom
A major symbol in the book is the narrators briefcase, it represents the future he had hoped to lived but he’ll never be see because of segregation

The author uses a good amount of symbolism throughout the book. The author describes the character’s experience very vividly, as if he has gone through it himself. “Perhaps I like Louis Armstrong because he’s made poetry out of being invisible” Pg 8 The author uses Louis Armstrong as a favorite for the character because he enjoys jazz too.
