The book starts on a Sunday afternoon in an upper floor Apartment and where Jimmy is sitting with his business partner Cliff Lewis and are reading the Sunday times while in one corner Jimmy’s wife Alison Porter is ironing.
Jimmy depicts a role of an ‘Angry young man’. Alison who comes from an upper-middle class family and an educated woman who is married to Jimmy Porter. Jimmy works at a sweetshop with Cliff Lewis who is also his Flat apartment. Helena Charles who is Alison’s friend who also stays with Jimmy in the absence of Alison. And Colonel Redfern plays the role as the father of Alison.

Jimmy has passed from the university but not with great prestige. Hence he works with Cliff Lewis at a sweet shop. Jimmy who doesn’t comes from a upper-middle class family as Helena and Alison. According to me this was the reason why he always uses to get angry on his wife. He saw his Father dying when he was just 10 years old. Hence he always said that she cannot understand him because she has never suffered, as he has suffered when he was just 10.
