Dialogic is a Canadian business solutions company which conducted a case study regarding Oregon Corrections Enterprises’ (OCE). OCE is a correctional institute focused on rehabilitating prisoners by vocational training; meanwhile, it provides inmates with a work environment, which helps facilitate an inmate back into society. OCE’s decision to change from a TDM Hardware-based call center to a less expensive VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) solution has been extremely beneficial and has enabled OCE to not only save money, but expand its call center (where inmates work) without creating additional expenses. More importantly, the alternative also needed to uphold all of Oregon’s telecommunication compliances for prisons and inmates, CBX’s software have accomplished this need.…

Butler University identified weaknesses in the existing campus communication systems. Chief Information Office (CIO) Scott Kincaid’s identified the need to upgrade or replace the Centrex system as Butler student enrollment and administrative data communication needs had outgrown its usefulness. Arguments for the Centrex system were that users found the system reliability to be beneficial. Once employees have a system that meets their current needs, some are reluctant to go embrace the next step to enhancing job capabilities. The majority of students liked having campus provided email even though 92% had cell phones.…

Mobile IP is a tunneling-based solution which takes advantage of the Cisco-Created GRE tunneling technology, as well as Simpler IP-in-IP tunneling protocol. This tunneling enables a router on a user’s home subnet to intercept and transparently forward IP packets to users while they roam beyond traditional network boundaries. This solution is a key enable of wireless mobility, both in the wireless LAN arena, such as the 802.11 standard and in the cellular environment for packet-based data offerings which offer connectivity to a user’s home network and the Internet.…

I have found myself wondering about the current state of Mobile IPs. What is Mobile IP? According to SearchMobileComputing.com (2007), “Mobile IP is an Internet Engineering Task Force communications protocol that is designed to allow mobile device users to move from one network to another while maintaining their permanent IP address.” This means that a mobile device can connect to an internet when not at a network at home. If the user of a mobile phone enters a network that is not his own “the network uses the Mobile IP protocol to inform the network of a care-of address to which all packets for the user’s device should be sent” according to Webopedia.com (2009). This will allow someone to carry his device through different networks with different addresses. There are pros and cons to this type of technology. The website 2.Rad.com (2002) list these advantages: there is always continuous connectivity, a user never has to connect or disconnect, there is no need for software updates, and the mobile uses whatever network is around. The website 2.Rad.com (2002) also list these disadvantages: uneven loads, failure of a network means that the mobile receives no packets, delays in packet sending, and a slowdown of other mobile activities. In my opinion, the only thing that may slow down Mobile IP is the lack of networks in many non-rural areas, or impoverished countries. As technology continues to improves, I believe that Mobile IP will be widely used, since cell phones are cheap enough to be a lifeline for many people. Businesses are finding that Mobile IPs are perfect for making sure that their employees become more productive and are satisfied with their jobs.…

The factors that account for the success and popularity of TCP/IP are integrated addressing system, design for routing, underlying network independence, scalability, open standards and development process, and university. TCP/IP includes within it a system for identifying and addressing devices on both small and large networks. Unlike some network layer protocols, TCP/IP is specifically designed to facilitate the routing of info over a network of arbitrary complexity. TCP/IP operates primarily at layers three and above, and includes provisions to allow it to function on almost any lower layer technology, including LANs, wireless LANs, and WANs of various sorts. One of the most amazing characteristics of TCP/IP is how scalable its protocols have proven to be. The TCP/IP standards are not proprietary, but open standards freely available to the public. Everyone uses TCP/IP because everyone uses it.…
