Iron Filings
Problem: What methods could be used to extract materials from the given mixture that contains iron filings, sand, salt and small stones?

Background There are things that must be understood before doing this lab. The first thing that must be understood is a mixture. A mixture has two or more pure substances, and the substances keep their chemical compositions (study.com).The next thing to apprehend is filteration. Filtration is a method used to separate a solid that isn’t dissolved in water. Another method is magnetic separation. Magnetic separation is used when there is a magnetically charged material in a mixture and is extracted by a magnetic force. The last method that could be used is evaporation. Evaporation separation is used by heating

Materials The materials that are need are iron filings, salt, small stones, sand, beakers, water, magnet, bunsen burner, striker, ring stand, wire gauze, ceramic square, a funnel and water.
Procedure
The first step is to take out the stones out of the mixture from the beaker.
The second step is to use a magnet to get the iron fillings out. The iron filings are attracted to the magnet, so they will attach to the magnet. Before using the magnet put a paper towel around the magnet, or the iron filings will be nearly possible to get it all off.
The third step is to add water to the sand and salt, so it can be ready to filtered.
The fourth step is to fold a paper coffee strainer. Make sure the fold is the correct size to fit in the funnel and add a little bit of water to the sides of the coffee strainer, so it remains opened. The reason for doing this because the salt will go through the coffee strainer while the sand does not.
The fifth step is to pour the beaker with the salt and sand into the funnel and let it filter the sand and salt. Also, make sure to have a beaker underneath the funnel to catch the salt

Let the salt water boil, so the water can evaporate. Keep waiting until there’s a salt ring in the beaker.

Results. The results for this experiment is the materials were all separated. There was no method to take out the stones except to use your hand to get the stones out. Magnetic separation was used to separate the iron filings which it did. The next method was filteration that was used once water was added to separate the sand and salt water. The last method which was evaporation which the water evaporated when the water was heated and left the salt ring in the beaker.

Conclusion The results proved that the methods used worked. An example is, once the water was added to the sand and water, then it was filtered through a coffee strainer. Since salt dissolves in water and sand is a solid that does not dissolve, the sand is either left in the beaker or left in the coffee strainer while the salt water is filtered through. Other classmates who were doing the same experiment and same procedure had quite similar

In this Laboratory experiment, my lab partner Alexander and I were able to understand thoroughly the physical and chemical properties of salt (NaCl) and sand (SiO2). Followed by the right procedure we were able to design and test out the components of both NaCl and SiO2 in order to separate the unknown mixture that we were able to find out about. We were also given the task to provide the percent composition of the mixtures. Therefore, the separation of components among this experiment allowed us to obtain the right numbers for our calculations.…

I figured filtration was the method would be the procedure used for removing the sand. I did not know how the benzoic acid would be removed, I did however think that distillation would be used to remove the salt. The method of boiling and dissolving the salt and benzoic acid from the sand was surprising. I didn’t expect the sand to stay at the bottom when I poured those elements into a different container.…

To filter the sand from the salt water, the salt water will be filtered through a funnel lined with filter paper into a beaker from a iron ring. This is possible because the salt is soluble and will dissolve in water as the sand is insoluble and will not dissolve in water there for staying on top of the filter paper as the salt water passes through.…

While the water was boiling with the table salt, sand, and benzoic acid, the water got thick. It was difficult to separate the solids because they would get stuck to the bottom of the Styrofoam cup. In order to separate the iron filings a magnet was used. The solution first needed to be spread out on a piece of paper. As the magnet was ran over the solution, the iron filings were picked up. It took several tries to get all of the iron picked up. To separate the sand, the burner and distilled water was used. As it boiled, it had to be stirred to make sure it was completely dissolved. Having done this twice ensures that the salt and the benzoic acid are completely removed from the sand. An ice bed was necessary to observe the benzoic acid crystallizing. The ice bed allowed the burning benzoic acid to cool down and change appearance and texture. The sand had to be over low heat to be completely dry. No sand splattered which made it effective for the data. To separate the benzoic acid, filtration was used. The mass of the filter paper was 1.1 grams. The ice bath was…
