Irony in crucible
Irony in The Crucible Irony is a contrast between what is stated and what is meant, or between what is expected to happen and what actually happens. The Crucible is a play by the American playwright Arthur Miller, and is filled with examples of irony throughout the play to build suspense and create anxiety. Arthur Miller used three kinds of irony, and they are dramatic, situational, and verbal irony. The Crucible is filled with many examples for each kind of irony through the play. The dramatic irony Occurs when a reader knows more about a situation or a character in the story than the characters do. One of the many examples of dramatic irony is when Elizabeth is asked to tell the truth about John being an adulterer. Later on the play, Elizabeth is accused of being a witch and John goes to court to prove Abigail is lying. When John does try to prove Abigail is lying, he ends up confessing that he committed adultery with Abigail. Then the judges bring in Elizabeth to tell the truth whether John had an affair or not. John had said that Elizabeth is a very honest woman who would never lie, but for the sake of her husband’s name, she lies when it was the only time she should not lie, and says John was not an adulterer, proving he should not be taking seriously in the court. John Proctor did indeed have an affair and Elizabeth also knew because she discharged Abigail from her service after finding about the affair. The situational irony is a contrast between what is expected to happen and what actually does happen. The example of situational irony is when Reverend Hale told John to say the Ten Commandments and John forgot the last one, which just so happened to be the one he broke, which was adultery. Elizabeth was the one to remind him that adultery was the one he forgot. The situational irony there is that John has literally forgotten that one.
The verbal irony occurs when someone states one thing and means another, and is often recognized as sarcasm. The

Irony, in literature can be anything from sarcasm to a shocking plot twist that can be inconvenient to the characters toward the end. A type of irony is situational which is where something very unexpected shows up at the last minute making the outcome of the story completely different then you expected. Such as the one in Lord of the Flies that effects one special character named Simon, and really almost all the characters.…

Situational irony occurs when what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected or appropriate. An instance where situational irony occurs is in the prologue where the Pardoner states that he preaches that the root of all evil is avarice. The only reason he preaches is to convince people to buy his pardons and holy relics so he can satisfy his own selfish desires. We would not expect a preacher to preach against his own vice. Another example occurs after the Pardoner finishes his tale. He attempts to sell his pardons to the travelers, starting with the Host, claiming, "He is most-enveloped in all sin." The irony here is that the Pardoner himself is probably the most sinful of the all the travelers.…

Two types of irony are presented in the short story The Story of an Hour, situational and dramatic irony. Situational irony is irony involving a situation in which actions have an effect that is opposite from what was intended, so that the outcome is contrary to what was expected. Dramatic irony is inherent in speeches or a situation of a drama and is understood by the audience but not grasped by the characters in the play or story. Situational irony is expressed through Mrs. Mallard’s actions to her husband’s death in the train accident. When she first heard the news of her husband’s death Mrs. Mallard “wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment”(188). It appeared to everyone that she was very sad and upset so she went upstairs to her bedroom; although, she was flowing with excitement. It is natural for a person to be very upset after losing a loved one, so they all understood what was happening.…

Miller continually uses irony in situations that led up to final accusations of witchcraft. In the events leading up to Elizabeth’s conviction, she receives a poppet from Mary Warren with a needle in its stomach. When he found this, Cheever exclaims “I never warranted to see such proof of Hell…” This is ironic in the way that he was involved in the trials of convicting witches, and witches are proof of the Devil, and therefore, proof of Hell. Another example of irony is in Act II when John Proctor hands Danforth a testament that people had signed declaring Rebecca Nurse, Martha Corey, and Elizabeth, good women. Proctor said “…sir—they’ve known the women many years and never saw no sign they had dealings with the devil.” This testament was supposed to help the women get out of jail. It ultimately failed.…

Miller also uses ironic devices throughout this play. Miller has few cases of verbal irony. He uses it in act 3 when Elizabeth tells the court that Proctor did not sleep with Abigail even though she knows that he did. All parts with the girls lying about witches and ghosts are cases of dramatic irony since, while the audience knows that the…

In many literary works, there are methods that authors use to make a story better. In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, dramatic irony is the driving method. Dramatic irony is something in which characters do not know something, but the reader or audience knows what the true reality is. According to some researchers, “A staple of Elizabethan and Shakespearean drama was dramatic irony” (Halio 25). Furthermore some researchers also belive that dramatic irony is very prominent in the play, “ One of the more prominent literary devices in the play is irony” (Sauer 673). Romeo and Juliet, and also their friends and families face a lot of instances of dramatic irony in the story. Dramatic irony creates suspense and adds to the conflict that exists between the Capulets and the Montagues in Shakespeare’s, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Dramatic irony in Romeo and Juliet occurs when Juliet and Romeo fall in love with each other at first sight, when Romeo’s friends don’t know that Romeo and Juliet have fallen in love with each other, and when Lady Capulet thinks that Juliet is crying about Paris, not Romeo.…

There are three known types of irony: dramatic, verbal, and situational. Dramatic irony is when something is understood by the reader but not grasped by the characters in the story. Verbal irony, however, is when the character in a story says one thing but means another. Lastly, situational irony is when in a situation, the actions have an effect that is opposite from what was expected or intended. Irony is a form of linguistic ambiguity achieved through textual, grammatical, and textual manipulation. Defined simply, irony is “the expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect” (OED Online). Seeing as this is clearly a violation of Quality, one of Grice’s maxims, it can be presumed that in most cases of irony speakers tend to violate one or some of Grice’s four maxims underneath the Cooperative Principle: Quantity, Quality, Manner, and Relation. In doing so, whether intentionally, unconsciously, or unpretentiously, the speaker creates triggers for particular conversational implicatures, which lend themselves to the ironic interpretation of the verbal utterance.…

One example of verbal irony in the film “Home Alone” is when Kevin told his family he just “hung around” when they were gone. That is verbal irony because Kevin didn’t just hang around, he fought off the robbers. Verbal irony is also used in the short story “Ransom of Red Chief” because in the short story it says, “ They haven’t yet found out that the wolves have taken the little lamb from the flock.” That evidence supports verbal irony because Red Chief is more like the wolf and the kidnappers are more like the lamb. The film, “Home Alone” and the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” also have examples of situational irony. In the film, “Home Alone” Kevin’s parents leave him at home because they forgot him. This describes situational irony because normally parents wouldn’t forget their child at home, but Kevin’s parents did. There is also situational irony in the short story “Ransom of Red Chief” because on page 67 Red Chief says, “I’ll behave, Snake-eye, if you won’t send me home.” This is situational irony because when a kid gets kidnapped they would usually want to go home but Red Chief doesn’t want to. Dramatic irony is used in the film, “Home Alone” and the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” also. One example from the film, “Home Alone” is when the cop was the robber because in the beginning he came to Kevin’s house asking questions. This…

Aligned with the idea of satire there is irony. Irony is something that is expressed in such a way that it means the opposite of what it seems to be expressing. Ironic tone is used. It is a tone that conveys the opposite of its apparent meaning. Dramatic irony is any situation where we as an audience have inside knowledge that characters on the stage do not have access to. For Example where Jack is struggling to justify how his name appears on the cigarette case, even though we know that Algernon knows him as Earnest. Dramatic Irony operates in a way where the audience has a privileged position with knowledge that is not available to the characters.…
