Irony In Richard Wright's Native Son
Elements of Irony in Native Son Native Son paints a disturbing, harsh picture of life within the "Black Belt" of Chicago in the 1940s. Wright uses irony; sometimes subtly and at other times obviously to shape the view of the reader and as a foreshadowing mechanism. From our initial scene to Bigger 's death, the technique of irony employed by Wright is effective, and devastating.

Our initial symbol which foreshadows the fate of our protagonist is the "huge black rat" (5). The rat represents the feelings which Wright explores within Bigger. The rat is killed right away, before it really has a chance, yet it is able to attack Bigger before it is destroyed. We can see the psychological and emotional blindness of Bigger, the blindness to reality by the hyper-religious Ma, and the blindness to the real role and ideals of the Communist party by both Jan and Mary. Perhaps the best use of irony is the physical blindness of Mrs. Dalton. Mrs. Dalton is the epitome of blind; she has very sensitive senses (she notices the smell of alcohol in Mary 's room, saying: "You 're dead drunk! You stink with whiskey!" (86)) but she is unable to see Bigger killing her daughter. Her extra sensitive hearing and lack of sight give Bigger the reason and opportunity to smother Mary. Yet, the true irony falls into the situation surrounding Mr. and Mrs. Dalton 's participation with groups such as the NAACP. While they believe that contributions of ping pong tables to inner city youth will help, their insulting charity to Bigger, coupled with Mr. Dalton 's excessive rent charges, ultimately causes the death of their …show more content…

When she warns Bigger that "the gallows is at the end of the road [he] is traveling", she is foreshadowing the fate of her son by the end of the novel (9). She tells Bigger to acknowledge his manhood by killing (the rat), which manifests into his killing Bessie. Through religion, however, we see the most obvious and devastating irony represented by Ma. She attempts to pray for the soul of her son, and gives him a wooden cross to wear around his neck. This cross, particularly due to its construction, appears identical to the burning cross of the Klu Klux Klan which Bigger sees out his jail cell window. Ma has effectively turned Bigger away from Christianity forever, in spite of her desire to do nothing other than save her son 's soul. Bigger ends up feeling that he "can die without a cross. . . [that he] ain 't got no soul!" (338) Irony follows Bigger throughout his life, and ultimately in his death. The introduction of Boris A. Max in Native Son represents a change; this is the first time Bigger has been able to explore some of his feelings, and with a white Jewish man! It is important to look at Max as a Communist and a Jew, because this makes him suspect in the eyes of popular opinion. Max is able to ask Bigger questions which are uncomfortable, but which make him think, which finally make him a man. Max states: "You 're human, Bigger" (424). This is the only time that

    The point of Baldwin’s essays is not so much to make his readers aware of racial prejudice in the States as it is to attempt to look at that prejudice, analyze it, understand where it comes from, and decide how to deal with it. In this essay, James Baldwin explores the complexities of both race relationships and familial relationships. Concerning his relationship with his father, Baldwin admits toward the beginning of the essay: “We had got on badly, partly because we shared, in our different fashions, the vice of stubborn pride.” This admission sets the tone for the rest of the essay, an idea of both opposition and similarity in this relationship. Also, Baldwin begins the title essay in Notes of a Native Son with a statement of death and birth. He mentions that “my father died. On the same day, a few hours later, his last child was born.”(p,52) This theme of death and birth also works itself out on a larger scale, eventually encompassing the entire essay. At the end of the essay Baldwin begins with his father’s funeral. Then he goes into reminiscing the times when his father was alive, realizing that they hadn’t talked much. Then back to the funeral, “The casket now was opened and the mourners were being led up the aisle to look for the last time on the deceased.” (p.65) Baldwin takes a last look at his father’s face.Baldwin is able to see his father in a different light, one that includes both his negative and positive characteristics. In doing so, Baldwin is also able to see himself more clearly.     The scene begins with Bigger and his brother Buddy trying to kill the rat by trapping it behind a trunk and throwing a pan at it. This parallels the hunt for Bigger after the whites discover he is Mary's murderer. Instead of trying to understand the foreign being in their society or apartment both groups immediately respond with a thirst for blood. Margara Averbach explains in her critical essay "An Overview of Native Son" that "the rat and Bigger are violent with each other, as white and black people are" (2). However Bigger is also guilty of jumping to violence. Both he and the rat respond with violence without hesitation. When cornered, the rat "leap[s] at Bigger's trouser leg and snag[s] it in his teeth" much like how Bigger attacks Gus (Wright 5). Bigger and the rat's readiness for violence is a result of fear of the other race or species. The whites and blacks, especially Bigger, feel cornered by the other race so they react much like the rat or any other cornered animal (Averbach 2). Each race's militaristic reactions to this pressure creates a cycle of racism and oppression that becomes deeper and deeper through the years until one side breaks resulting in the murder of Mary Dalton and the manhunt for Bigger.     There are crucial parts throughout the novel that Hosseini wanted us at readers to visualize as we read. Three ironic moments illustrated in the novel that I picked was when Baba told Amir “Now, no matter what the mullah teaches, theres is only one sin, only one. And that is theft” (16).     In the 19th century, all civilians of African descent were treated as inferiors to citizens of white skin complexion. Segregation became a dominant influence in society, and the living conditions (comparing white communities versus black communities) were practically contrapositive to each other. Basically, on average, the black people (or other inferior races during this time period) lived in terrible isolated districts that consist of tenements, where brown-skinned families live in extremely crowded habitats, unsanitary “rat-infested” (174) living conditions, with a barely affordable price.     Native Son is told almost entirely from Bigger’s point of view. This allows the reader to fully comprehend the struggles that a black man faced during this time period in a segregated America.
