In Legend by Marie Lu the author uses situational irony to add unexpected or mysterious actions to keep the plot rich and interesting. At this point in the story, June and Thomas are watching a riot begin. June and Thomas are watching from a raised platform outside Batalla Hall. The riot began because of the sentencing of Day, they did not want/like that. The main problem that shows situational irony is that instead of just throwing dust bombs or tar gases (like they normally do), the soldiers are positioned on top of some building and then start firing at the crowd with their guns, killing more than a hundred people.…
Similarly, Twain uses situational irony to depict and to satirize Miss Watson and Widow Douglas' religious beliefs as well as the hypocrisy of Miss Watson’s guidance. Miss Watson educates Huck about religion and how to act appropriately through telling stories such as “Moses and the Bulrushes” (2), where Moses freed the Hebrew slaves from captivity. However, Miss Watson owns Jim, a slave, contradicting the moral of the story, Moses freeing slaves. Also, it is ironic that Miss Watson brings her slaves in for evening prayers: ”fetched the niggers in and had prayers”(3).Despite against the moral character of Christianity of having slaves, Miss Watson continues to teach these “righteous” behaviors to Huck, creating an ironic situation. Although…
The short story, “The Cask of Amontillado” written by Edgar Allen Poe is about a psychotic man named Montresor who seeks revenge against Fortunato, a man who allegedly committed malice towards him. Poe utilizes verbal irony to establish the story’s events and to create a humorous yet subtle way to show the misfortunes of Fortunato which eventually leads up to his death. For example, “Enough, he said; the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough” (Poe 241). Fortunato is correct because the cough does not kill him, however his death occurs later in the story because of a totally different reason. This conversation contributes to the story’s mood by adding a bit of humor since readers already know from the beginning…
Though the story is subjective, it also questions the mind of the reader in terms of critical thought. Diaz highlights how an person is reduced to just social class and race and by doing so asking a question relating to the authority or accuracy of the decrease of social beings. The protagonist lacks in all these three factors, making her stubborn, angry, and a know-it-all person. However, what she is not aware of is her family economic hardship neither the other kids. The innocence of the Protagonist is highly recognizable throughout the story, the taxi ride, the woman in a fur coat in the heat of summer, etc. The speaker has never seen someone in a fur coat during summer. She thinks is crazy, but that represents a symbol of wealth, something she was discovering through this lesson. Then they arrive at the toy store, and everyone is looking through the window amazed with the price tags. It took them a while to come inside the store, the kids know that they do not belong in there. Once inside, the speaker sees a clown, it is just $35 dollars really cheap compared to the other items in the store and pocket change for the rich folks. The Night Circus displays textual features that reinforce realities socially constructed hierarchy in regards to the masculine and feminine. The male/female binaries and societal denotations for the terms ‘male,’ ‘female’ and terms particular to the magical world such as ‘magician,’ strengthen the authoritative and dominant position of men. Within the first pages of the novel the reader is immediately made aware of the severe power imbalance between the male and female gender, evident through the first meeting between Celia and her father Hector.…
All through the semester, read a numerous amount of short stories, ranging from Tarzan of the apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs to Spunk by Zora Neale Hurston. Each story includes their own twists and turns. Out of all the stories, I choose to write about The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe.…
In her story “The Stolen Party”, Liliana Heker uses foreshadowing to illustrate how life boundaries between the social classes can’t be overcome, even with friendship. She first settle that idea of boundaries in the beginning when Rosaura has a conversation with her mother about going to the birthday party of her “friend” Luciana, who is the daughter of her mother’s employer. Rosaura is convinced she can be friends with Luciana even if she’s way more wealthy than her, but her mother isn’t that naïve. Rosaura’s mother told her “That one’s not your friend” and that all she really is to those people is “the maid’s daughter, that’s what.” Heker drew attention to the mother’s warning about the rough reality and the way Rosaura doesn’t believe her…
In the free-verse novel, The Simple Gift, author, Steven Herrick, subverts normative conventions of gender and class to present the possibilities of economic and social freedom to his young adult audience. This subversion can be seen throughout the conscious characterisation of three distinct characters: Billy, Old Bill and Caitlin- each of whom has different social and financial positions, yet deliberately challenge the expectations of their gender and class to construct complex, even contradictory, identities. Throughout this essay, I will examine how the deliberate decisions made by each character reveals the extent to they wish to challenge gender and class-based norms, as their identities are consciously informed by their previous social…
