First, the portrayal of characters plays a fundamental role in creation of the plot, without strong characters, the ideas would appear simple. Poe creates vivid characters which effectively assist the construction of the plot and ideas. There are four main characters in “The Tell-Tale Heart”, the nameless narrator, the old man, the neighbor who called police and the police officers who came to investigate. The twist of the plot at the end serves to enhance this characteristic of the unstable narrator. The story starts with the narrator saying that he is sane, and goes on to say that he will tell a tale to prove his saneness. Then the narrator gives the background of the day’s events by telling me he plans to kill this poor old man whose only crime was having a pale blue vulture eye. The narrator explains that every night he brings a lantern and watches the old man. One night however the old man opened his eyes because the narrator made a slight noise. The narrator was so enraged that the old man opened his creepy vulture eye that he sprung into the room and murdered the man with his bed. He then mutilated the body in the bathtub so there would be no blood to be found. He then hid the body parts under the home’s floorboards. Early in the morning, there was a knock on the door. The police came in to search the house because a neighbor heard a shriek in the night. Nothing seemed suspicious to the officers, but the narrator starts to hear heartbeats from under the floorboards. The heartbeats got so loud that the narrator decides to confess his crime to the
