Essay title: In Amir, has Hosseini created a character that we can look to for moral guidance?
In the book, The Kite Runner, Hosseini was able to put us, the readers in Amir’s shoes as he takes us through his journey of self-discovery and his seemingly endless fight for redemption. In a way, it seems that Hosseini is portraying Amir as a character that we should look up to for moral guidance. The development and changes in Amir’s personality and ideologies was clearly shown as the plot develops, as the setting changes, and as Amir grows older.
One of the factors that make us think and behave the way we behave is the society. Of course, there are subsets of right and wrong that are agreed all over the world, but it is a fact that different people have different ideologies and principles. Through Amir, the author was able to show how the principles in society can affect the behavior and beliefs in an individual.
During Amir’s younger times, Amir has made plenty of bad decisions; which reflects him as a bad person. As he grows older, he developed his senses of maturity, courage and making the right decisions. All the choices he made reflect on type of person he is (in terms of good & bad). Despite his bad actions, he is still a character that we can look to for moral guidance.
Little Amir’s life in Afghanistan wasn’t an ideal life to grow up in. With lots of ethnic prejudice displayed all over the country, it is already most likely that a child will grow up becoming a prejudice man as well. If affects the way he treats Hassan and Ali. Because he often encounters ethnic prejudice around him, he thinks that it’s normal. But due to his strong moral sense, he was at least able to prevent himself from discriminating Hassan like how others did.
