without knowing people in other cultures. People using the internet are more accessible today because of social media, and that leads to more support. Without social media or the internet, people who need support in tough times wouldn’t get enough support they need. Access to the internet’s information allows us to think faster and a lot better. Without access to this information we won’t know as much as we know now. Google makes us smarter because we have free and ready information at our hands. “ There’s no doubt the internet can create distractions. But 81 percent of experts polled by the Pew Internet Research Project say the opportunities outweigh the distractions.”(Is Google Making Us Stupid, Norvig)
Without Google, we wouldn’t be as updated and acquaint ourselves with new information and restore our curiosities’ thirst for information. The internet’s users are more likely to encounter countless diverse ideas. Without those ideas, we wouldn’t be able to power up our imagination, leading to less social people and boring ideas. Google users are more likely to see a wider range of information with more creative ideas. If we don’t have creative ideas than we can’t brainstorm ideas that help ourselves understand things better. “Researchers say that technology use can benefit the brain in some ways. Imaging studies show the brains of the internet users become more efficient at finding information. And some players of some video games develop better visual activity.” ( Attached to Technology and PAying a Price, Richtel). These video games are actually a good thing and if we take them away, then many of our population will not have this ability. Cell Phones and computers transformed life. People escape their rooms and handle countless tasks and they free up their time to go and on more exciting adventures. If we never invented cell phones or computers, people would be stuck in a loop of the same everyday routines ﹘ wake up, get ready for work, drive to work…‒ they also would have many boring and lengthy tasks that they could easily complete with electronics. “At the University of Rochester, researchers found that players of some fast-paced video games can track the movement of a third more objects on a screen than non-players. They say the games can improve reaction and the ability to pick out details amid clutter.”( The Myth of Multitasking, Richtel).
The other people who think we should shut down our screens are wrong because they say that the more ads Google shows us the more money it makes, promoting distraction.
If it is such a distraction then why do scientists say that” Internet users showed greater brain activity than nonusers, suggesting they were growing their neural circuitry. Or that people learn best when focused and the internet is a distraction, “ Google contains the world’s best writing, images, and ideas.”( Is Google Making Us Stupid?, Norvig) Are the world’s greatest writing, images, and ideas such as William Shakespeare, Mario Testino, or William James Sidis a distraction?
Our schools should not participate in “Shut Down Your Screen Week” because technology helps people connect more, helps us think faster and better, and makes us more efficient at finding information. Technology helps us every day with multiple tasks. Taking it away ensures that we could never keep up with the amount of work we receive everyday, because internet information is instant and
safe.
