The theme of madness is one of the most popular theme in the play it is portrayed through several characters in the play such as Hamlet and Ophelia. A lot of criticism debates about hamlet madness is he really insane or is he pretend to be insane in order to hide his true intention to revenge his father death who was killed by the hand of his brother and Hamlet uncle Claudius .
There is a lot of evidences or clues that shows that Hamlet madness is just a mask that he put it on for the seek of his revenge at the end of act one when hamlet finished talking to his father ghost he told his friend Horatio that he will start to act in strange and insane way and to " put an antic disposition on " (I. v . 170,175). …show more content…
However , Claudius was having doubts about Hamlet madness, when he said to the two old follow of Hamlet "Get from him why he puts on this confusion" (III. i. 2), which show that he understands it as pretence and not real madness. Then he admits that Hamlet's actions and words do not indicate madness but melancholy when he said "What he spake, though it lack'd form a little Was not like madness." (III. i. 163-4.), but because it suits him and serve his purpose to declare him as a madman and get rid of him, he did not seek the truth but his own personal
