Is John ready to become a social worker?
I believe somehow you find where you are meant to be eventually, although I was lost at first, my initial choice in my course of studies was not social work but forces beyond my control were at work guiding me. I joined the program and has not one day regretted continuing with it. When you hear persons say find a career you love and you would not work a day in your life, I can safely say I am one of the fortunate ones to be on that path.
According to the International Federation of Social workers, social work can be defined as a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. A poor one? Social work is a demanding and varied profession, often necessitating a practitioner to wear many hats at any given moment; therapist, caretaker, administrator, advisor and many others. Though these diverse roles might seem to require an almost limitless range of knowledge and expertise, a social worker with a versatile set of basic social work skills will function well in most situations. A good social worker displays the skill of Empathy.
Social workers must be able to feel empathy for their clients. Empathizing is both an intellectual and emotional process. Empathy enables social workers to mentally place themselves in their client’s position. Empathy is one of the primary reason for pursuing this field. (Joshua John, 2012)
