Is Macbeth a Machiavellian leader?
Macbeth; Not a Machiavellian Leader Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince was written as a guide to success for future and current rulers all over the world. Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Machiavelli’s The Prince both present different viewpoints on how to be a noble ruler. Some people say that Macbeth is a Machiavellian ruler. Others qualify him saying that he holds certain Machiavellian traits but not all. While other people say he isn’t a Machiavellian character at all, nor does he possess any qualities of a genuine Machiavellian ruler. Macbeth does hold some Machiavellian qualities like maintaining the fear of his army, restraining himself from possessing the women that belong to others, and not being opposed to using force in order to obtain that which he desires. Despite possessing these Machiavellian qualities, Macbeth is not a true Machiavellian leader. According to Machiavelli, a prince should avoid being hated by all, which Macbeth doesn’t do so well. Machiavelli says a prince should avoid being cruel, rapacious, a violator of the property and women of one’s subjects, because “…you will find [the] cruel and rapacious– men who… did not hesitate to commit every kind of iniquity against the people; and all… came to a bad end…” (19.20). With the death of Duncan, the other characters in the play become suspicious of Macbeth – maybe he isn’t the type of ruler they wanted after all. The other characters lose all trust and respect for Macbeth. The death of Macduff’s family ultimately causes everyone around Macbeth to hate him. Macbeth’s abrupt and ruthless decision to “give to th’edge o’th’sword to [Macduff’s] wife, [Macduff’s] babes, and all the unfortunate souls that trace [Macduff] in his line” shows how unhesitant he is to rid of any and all obstacles in his path

to the throne (4.1.151-153). This is when Macduff finally decides that Macbeth must be overthrown and Macduff himself will not rest until he “[treaded] upon the tyrant’s [Macbeth] head”

Finally, planning requires instituting control systems to monitor progress toward the goals.…

Macbeth is a very power greedy person. It is not necessarily his own doing that he is such a ruthless person. It all started (Macbeth being power greedy) with the Three Witches predictions: "All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, thane of Glamis!/ All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, thane of/ Cawdor!/ All hail, Macbeth! That shalt be king hereafter." (1.3.50-54)

As soon as Macbeth learned of his future, he began to scheme on just exactly how he would fulfill these prophecies. That is when he decided that he would have to murder Duncan to fulfill the last prophecy. But that is when he had a change or heart.

The only problem with Macbeth deciding not to murder Duncan, is that all of a sudden Lady Macbeth became the power greedy one. This is when Lady Macbeth's scheming began. Although Macbeth had changed his mind and basically refused to murder Duncan, Lady Macbeth was able to eventually convince him to carry through with the plan.

Even though Macbeth was the one who executed the plan, Lady Macbeth was the mastermind behind the scheme. Her greed for power was the one major factor that possessed her to convince Macbeth of the plan and carry through with it. Macbeth murdered Duncan at Iverness, and became hysterical after doing so. As a result of Malcolm and Donalbain's suspicions resulting in their departure to England and Ireland Macbeth became king: this was the ultimate power that he and Lady Macbeth had as their goal (well, actually it was more of Lady Macbeth's goal), and now he eventually had received it. Nothing was going to take away this ultimate power from Macbeth, and he would do anything to keep it. Macbeth's ruthlessness results in him ordering three murderers to murder his best friend, Banquo. The power of being king has taken over Macbeth's life, and he is a victim of his own greed for power. He is a tyrant. Not only does Macbeth murder Banquo (not directly, of course), he also murders (actually he has people murder) Macbuffs family.…

A significant event in this story was when Macbeth murdered Duncan. This struck uneasiness throughout Scotland and some people feared for their lives. Malcolm and Donalbain especially were afraid because they believed; “There’s daggers in men’s smiles.” (Act II sc (iv), ln 165) Banquo’s murder is a fearful moment as well. Macbeth orders murderers to kill Banquo by saying; “Who wear our health but sickly in his life,/ Which in his death were perfect.” (Act III sc (i) lns 119-120) Macbeth is the cause of his innocent friend’s death and he does it purely for his own benefit and personal gain. Macbeth also causes the death of Macduff’s family. He says to Macduff; “My soul is too much charged with blood of thine already.” (Act V sc (viii), lns 6-7) when Macduff challenges him. The family has neither harmed nor threatened Macbeth in any way. There is pity felt for the deaths of these innocent people and fear of the murderous Macbeth throughout Scotland. To begin with, in Macbeth three witches come to visit Macbeth and Banquo. Well they are there they inform Macbeth that he will soon become king. When the witches state, “You greet with present grace and great prediction of noble having and of royal hope that he seems rapt withal” (Act I, Scene III, Pg. 6), they confuse Macbeth because the living and grand King Duncan is still alive and well. The witches in Macbeth represent evil and misdeed because they make Macbeth start thinking about the treacherous deed that he would have to do to become king. This relates to Machiavelli when he describes a Prince committing wickedness to become king especially when he states “Yet it cannot be called talent to slay fellow-citizens, to deceive friends, to be without faith, without mercy, without religion; such methods may gain empire, but not glory” (Machiavelli), because he is illustrating that a Prince gaining the throne would be willing to kill, lie, and deceive anyone or anything that gets in his way. Machiavellis reasoning compares to Macbeth because Macbeth is willing to deceive his close companion King Duncan.…

He orders to “seize upon Fife...and all unfortunate soul that trace him in line”. In essence, Macbeth’s paranoia results in him being more psychologically unstable, but this time about losing his crown rather than being caused by guilt. Also, the witches’ prophecies slowly begin to envelop, causing him to repeat the words for a false sense of confidence. However, Lady Macbeth ultimately gives in to the burden of internal guilt that was previously hidden prior to the sleepwalking scene in Act 5, Scene 1 and commits suicide. In Macbeth’s soliloquy discusses the futility of life, on account that it is meaningless, “signifying nothing”. These words highlight Macbeth’s acceptance of defeat and that all the power he’s acquired mean nothing anymore. During the final scene, the insane Macbeth reiterates witches’ prophecies on the fact that he is invincible. Contrastly, Macduff states that he was “from his mother’s womb untimely ripped”. Therefore, Macduff’s final words result in Macbeth’s inevitable realization of…

    Is Macbeth A Tyrant?

    • 523 Words
    • 3 Pages

Shakespeare wrote many works of literature that covered many different topics. In Macbeth, one of his main topics was ambition. Macbeth was driven by ambition causing him to commit his first murder. He then begins to commit other crimes including murder again in order to cover up for his other crimes. Eventually, Macbeth is seen as a tyrant that loses his life for it. We assume that Lady Macbeth also goes crazy but in reality she is plotting and calculating. Her greed and conscious begin to weigh heavy on her and she ends up committing suicide. Proof of this is when Lady Macbeth says, “It is too full o’ the milk of human kindness to catch the nearest way. Thou wouldst be great, Art not without ambition, but without the illness should accompany it.” (N.p., n.d. Web Dec 2015). Lady Macbeth wants Macbeth to become king so badly that she pushes him to commit murder so that he may become king. He ends up giving in to their ambition by killing Duncan after Lady Macbeth belittles him and makes him believe she will leave him. Although…
