IS OBESITY A DISEASE OUTLINE
IS CHILD OBESITY A DISEASE?
PRO CHILD OBESITY IS A DISEASE CON CHILD OBESITY IS A DISEASE
Child obesity is a disease- On June 18, 2013 the American Medical Association voted to recognize obesity as a disease. This puts more emphasis on the health condition by doctors and insurance companies to minimize its effects. Child obesity is not a disease- They say calling obesity a disease would stigmatize a huge population, and categorize some people as sick who actually may be healthy.
Obesity, like other diseases, impairs the normal functioning of the body- Health problems once seen only in adults are now being diagnosed in children, including Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Overweight children are more likely to suffer from asthma and apnea than normal- weight children. And children do not “outgrow” pudginess. Labeling obesity a disease is an excuse not to diet- A study found that overweight men and women who are told obesity is a disease are less interested in going on a diet to improve their health. Labeling obesity also makes people believe they have no control over their weight, therefore making them lazy and helpless to take action.
Obesity decreases a person's life expectancy and can lead to death, like other diseases- The results found that obese individuals, 30 pounds overweight, have a death rate 2.5 times that of people with a healthy weight. That translates to a loss of 6.5 to 13.7 years of life. Many obese people live long lives- Although obesity brings an increased risk of many health complications, the new study shows that people who are obese but do not have such complications might live as long as normal weight individuals.
Obesity can be a genetic- Genes can directly cause obesity in disorders such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome. The Involvement of genetic factors in the development of obesity is estimated to be 40–70%. Obesity can be inherited like height. Obesity is the result of overeating- Overeating occurs when you consume, over the long term, more food than you actually need to maintain good health. Overeating is often regarded as an eating disorder.
Major medical groups recognize obesity as a disease- The American Medical Association has adopted a new policy that officially labels obesity as a disease requiring a range of medical interventions to advance obesity treatment and prevention. Obesity is the result of an inactive lifestyle- 40 years ago most children walked or biked to school, had almost an hour of physical education or active recess each day, and after school played outside until suppertime. No longer. Today children are either driven to school or take a school bus, even over short distances. .
