Shakespeare a turnoff for schools? Four hundred years have passed since William Shakespeare penned his last play. Yet his prose, plots, and characters are as alive today as they were when the plays were originally staged during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Shakespearean works should still be studied in school, as his attitude, values and beliefs are still relevant in today’s society. He’s 450 years old and yet, not only do we perform his plays but also, we recognize ourselves in them and continue to use phrases and words he coined in our everyday language.

In today’s society humans are still driven by greed and use of their power to fulfill their ambitions seen in many events. This is relevant for schools to learn and study about considering that Shakespeare’s characters are still present in today’s world.
Not only does his characters portray the people of the world today but his moral messages of his play are still relevant as they have been used in modern day films. Shakespeare attitude towards the moral of power corrupt is also shown in Macbeth. The play shows Macbeth fulfilling his desires by using his power but is then killed. Shakespeare’s moral has been adapted into children- family films, for example, the Disney movie ‘The Lion King’.
In the well-known film, Scar kills Mufasa and chases Simba, the rightful heir, out of the kingdom so he (Scar) can become king. However, Simba returns to fight and eventually dethrones Scar, not long after which Scar is killed by his former allies the hyenas. Jade Mile, an educator says, “various films and pop culture definitely show that Shakespeare is indeed prevalent and has relevant themes and morals in our society even though it is more than 400 years old”. His themes have been used in vary types of media such a music and used as genres. Simone Ellul, theater practitioner said, “From cutting-edge theater, to pop music through tracks like Mumford and Sons’ Sigh No More, Shakespeare remains our contemporary to the fact that he developed the concept of the character and changed the acting style of his age, as well as developing new genres”. It can be said that Shakespeare has created timeless universal themes, which is importance for the English genre studied in school.
If Shakespeare were such a turn-off and not relevant why, then, would The Bell Shakespeare Company, for example, be performing to more than 80,000 school children in all states and territories annually?
