Essay question: Is society becoming less civil?
Thesis statement: Society has become less civil because of narcissism, anonymity, and stress.
Outline:
Question: Is society becoming less civil and ruder?
Thesis Statement: Society has become less civil and more rude because of narcissism, pressure (Introduction) presented by the media and anonymity provided by screen to screen conversations.
Discussion of First Point: narcissism • *2008 CBC documentary stated that today's population has been brought up in a “me generation”
People put their own convince over any rules or morals
People have become accustomed to getting what they want and when they want it. With this attitude people have lost respect for not only other peoples wants but their needs as well.
Discussion of Second Point: pressure presented by the media. • From an young age people are taught by the media to want to get ahead in life. Getting ahead is taught as having money and power. In a race to the top, all rules are broken, including the basic morals of respecting one another.
The media has portrayed extensively harsh constructive criticism, not as a bad thing but as something that is for the better good of others and people have begun demonstrating this behavior in their own day-to-day lives.
Discussion of Third Point: anonymity presented by screen-to-screen conversations • Face to face interactions make humans feel as though they will have to take responsibility for their actions. While texting, blogging or social networking however, people get a surge in bravery and boldness because the screen in front of them creates this imaginary fantasy world where they will not be held accountable for their actions and in some cases this is true.
