There are many points that can be made to further prove how Sweden is either a Socialist or Liberalist country, or even both. However the main factor that it really comes down to is the people. Sweden is a democratic country so whatever the people vote for, is what will come into power. For 45 consecutive years the Social Democratic Party was in power, and they were just re elected this year, it’s clear that the Swedish populace is very much on the side of socialism and the welfare state and the idea of “The People’s Home”, the idea of the government taking care of it’s citizens for life, in return for taxes. It finds a way to peacefully let the two ideologies co exist and work fluently alongside each other. Because of this it can be said that Sweden is uniquely ahead of most countries when handling social and economic systems. The Welfare State does provide healthcare, education, and various stores but there are also several privately owned businesses that are better known and at times bigger than the services provided by the welfare state itself. Examples of this are businesses like Coop, Lidl and ICA. The reason that the people vote socialist is most likely because of the greater amount of lower and middle class that there were in the early and middle 1900’s who were taken away by the idea of equality for everyone, who then went on to raise their children to believe their opinions. This is why Sweden is more social than liberal. I definitely think that today the internet and social media and other very liberal western influences will cause the next generation to grow up recognizing the opportunity for success in liberalism. The word that could be used is “greedy”, but I think it could be better explained with “ambitious”. There are a few thinkers of the adult generation today in Sweden that have liberal views but I believe that they are currently outnumbered by the Socialists.
