Is There A God? By Bertrand Russel

The text, “Is There a God?” by Bertrand Russel connects to the CIT question, “What does it mean to be human?” On page 3 it says, “There is a moralistic argument for belief in God, which was popularized by William James. According to this argument, we ought to believe in God because, if we do not, we shall not behave well.” Believing in God has no effect on “behaving well.” Behaving well has to do with how you were raised and the values you hold. “Many of the best men known to history have been unbelievers. John Stuart Mill may serve as an instance. And many of the worst men known to history have been believers…Perhaps Henry VIII may serve as typical” (3). Just because one believes in God does not make them a good person. Personally,
