This book is based on a true story where tragedies of the natural phenomenon, joined with limited technology and the arrogance of man that led to catastrophic results like deaths and disasters in Galveston, Texas.
The book covers time periods of the 1900’s in which people were more concerned about reputation, money and conserving their career than people’s safety. In this time period the city of Galveston had been growing in the economy. “He was loyal, a believer in dignity, honor and effort. (Pg. 3) This man was fascinated with the weather and was very dedicated to what he loved. “In November of 1893, two years after Isaac arrived in Galveston to open the Texas Section of the new U.S. Weather Bureau, a government inspector wrote: “I suppose there is not a man in the Service on Station Duty who does more real work than he… He takes a remarkable degree of interest in his work, and has a great pride in making his station one of the nest and most important in the country, as it is now”. (Pg. 4) Joseph, Isaac’s younger brother was also a very smart guy but in the other hand he felt jealous by the great achievements of his older brother which this made rivalry between the brothers. Willis Moore was concerned more with his reputation and career than getting forecasts right and banned hurricane warnings in the U.S. from Cuba. Captain T. P. Halsey was a person with arrogance and stubbornness which symbolizes how many people felt about
