1. Discuss how Carlson’s storage solutions address the IT goals the company is trying to achieve.
Carlson’s IT division established six goals for the company which include:
1. Implement an enterprise data warehouse.
2. Build a global network.
3. Move to enterprise-wide architecture.
4. Establish six-sigma quality for Carlson clients
5. Facilitate outsourcing and exchange
6. Leverage existing technology and resources
Carlson implemented IP SAN to achieve these goals. Multiple IP storage switches connected to the Ethernet switch core to the SAN storage system can build a global network for Carlson, and IP SAN can storage data over IP facilitated integration for Carlson’s enterprise-wide network and further implement an enterprise data warehouse and build an enterprise-wide architecture.
In addition, the Share Storage Model (SSM) from the Storage networking Industry Association (SNIA) helps Carlson to share directories and data and provide cross-platform support as well as remote NAS service for Carlson which can establish six-sigma quality for Carlson clients. Also, remote storage access makes Carlson able to untie geographically dispersed sites within a global IT strategy.
Last but not least, Carlson’s storage solutions enables Carlson to leverage its IP investment for the existing technology and resources and further facilitate outsourcing and exchange because a core IP SAN could meet both data-center and wide-area storage requirement and integrate new storage technologies.
2. Discuss the pros and cons of consolidating data in central data center facilities versus the distributed data storage arrangement it replaced.
The advantages of consolidating data in central data center instead of distributing data storage arrangement are integrating the storage services more efficiently, having better availability for applications, providing better operating performance, and reducing administration and management of
