Ishmael Beah Imagery
As an SHS senior, incoming students should keep discussing and learning about Ishmael Beah’s memoir, A Long Way Gone for the Sterling High School English IV curriculum. The author displays vivid imagery to aid students in visualizing what happens beyond the text and the impact it has on the students that read the memoir. Beah’s memoir reveals intense imagery for students to gain full knowledge on Beah’s history. For instance, Beah struggles to face decisions he has to make while surviving in the villages of Sierra Leone: “Along the spring there were several trees with ripe fruit that I had never seen. I decided to try some of it, since it was the only edible thing around. It was either take the chance and eat this fruit that might poison …show more content…
Beahs experiences things no child should ever have to experience: “My squad was my family, my gun was my provider and protector, and my rule was to kill or be killed… My childhood had gone by without my knowing, and it seemed as if my heart had frozen”(126). With losing his own family, Beahs tries adjusting to his new soldier friends and bonds with them. Also, his weapons can mean life or death. However, his rough childhood made Beah grow into a person who can accept change. In addition, Beah changes physically and emotionally, he is now a killer and cannot control his state of mind: “The corporal gave the signal with a pistol shot and I grabbed the man’s head and slit his throat in one fluid motion. His Adam’s apple made way for the sharp knife, and I turned the bayonet on its zigzag edge as I brought it out”(125). Here, the author illustrates that a person can change within a matter of time. This part of the memoir can have a huge impact on students because of how gruesome one human can be. All in all, students will receive many different messages from Ishmael Beah’s memoir, A Long Way Gone but the curriculum has vivid imagery to get the point across to readers. Undoubtedly, English IV department should keep on teaching students the meaning beyond of Beah’s touching

    In Ishmael Beah's autobiographical narrative "A Long Way Gone", the theme of the story is to never give up, because throughout the book the main character faces numerous difficult situations, and manages to overcome them. First, Beah's responses towards certain problems show the reader his will to survive.     Throughout the essay, Prose argues that literatures in high schools are dumbing down the English curriculum. She says books that are “chosen for students to read are for ‘obvious lessons.’” However, Prose does not mention “great” books that students should read and that will help them to understand what the characters are feeling. “…The weaker novels of John Steinbeck, the fantasies of Ray Bradbury,” (424). Prose explains how her sons never read the better of Steinbeck’s novels in high school and she makes the assumption that all high school students read the so-called weaker Steinbeck novels.     For example, we see on page 100 that Beah is sick just looking at dead bodies, “One of them lay on his stomach, and his eyes were wide open and still; his insides were spilling onto the ground. I turned away, and my eyes caught the smashed head of another man. Something inside his brain was still pulsating and he was breathing. I felt nauseated. Everything began to spin around me.” (12.100) Any normal boy who still has his innocence and fun left would obviously feel remorse for this man and start to feel lightheaded. A couple sentences later, the soldier says to Ishmael that he would soon get used to it, which foreshadows upcoming events where he becomes a child soldier. We see only 22 pages later that Ishmael has lost all of the innocence he had and becomes unremorseful, “So when the lieutenant gave orders, I shot as many as I could, but I didn’t feel better. After every gunfight we would enter the rebel camp, killing those we had wounded”. (14.122) We see here that Ishmael is no longer that normal boy who likes to listen to rap cassettes and recite Shakespeare. He has grown into a full grown killer who hates all rebels with passion.
