Islam: Misconceptions among Muslims
Muslims are violent, terrorists and/or extremists

This is the biggest misconception about Islam, no doubt resulting from the constant stereotyping and bashing the media gives Islam. When a gunman attacks a mosque in the name of Judaism, a Catholic IRA guerrilla sets off a bomb in an urban area, or Serbian Orthodox militiamen rape and kill innocent Muslim civilians, these acts are not used to stereotype an entire faith. Never are these acts attributed to the religion of the perpetrators. Yet how many times have we heard the words 'Islamic, Muslim fundamentalist, etc.' linked with violence.

Many people use the name of religions for their own purposes. One should consult the source of Islam and separate what the true religion of Islam says from what is portrayed in the media. Islam literally means 'submission to Allah' and is derived from a root word meaning 'peace'.

Islam may seem exotic or even extreme in the modern world. Perhaps this is because religion doesn't dominate everyday life in the West, whereas Islam is considered a 'way of life' for Muslims and they make no division between secular and sacred in their lives. Like Christianity, Islam permits fighting in self-defence, in defence of religion, or on the part of those who have been expelled forcibly from their homes. It lays down strict rules of combat, which include prohibitions against harming civilians and against destroying crops, trees and livestock. Nowhere does Islam enjoin the killing of innocents. The Quran says: {Fight in the cause of Allah against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. Allah does not love transgressors} (Quran 2:190), {If they seek peace, then seek you peace. And trust in Allah for He is the One that heareth and knoweth all things} (Quran 8:61)

War, therefore, is the last resort, and is subject to the rigorous conditions laid down by the sacred law. The term 'jihad' literally means 'struggle'. Muslims believe that there are two kinds of jihad. The other

The name Islam literally means “surrender,” or “Submission.” The idea behind this name is the complete surrender or submission to God (Allah). The word Muslim means one who surrenders to Allah. The words Islam and Muslim are closely related to the word “peace.” The words of Islam and Muslim propose the inner tranquility that is achieved with the surrendering to the divine. Islam teaches that all religions originally had the same essential message - which was to submit whole-heartedly to the will of God and to worship Him and Him alone. For this reason, Islam is not a new religion but is the same divinely revealed Ultimate Truth that God revealed to all prophets, including Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus. The word "Islam" means peace and submission. Peace means to be at peace with you and your surroundings and submission means submission to the will of God. In, “The truth of Islam”, Andrew Mack points out that Islam is not a violent religion nor peacefully, yet both. He states that the reason why Non-Muslims views Muslims as “negative” or “terrorist” is, because of ISIS doings, al-Qaida, and the other ultra-violent Islamist groups. However, close to 1.8 billion Muslims remain peaceful societies, as the country were not involved in WWII (Mack). Also, Mack said to determine where violence stands, there are two factors: homicide/ murder rate, and “conflict years” to examine on. He used statistical facts to attest this point.…

To those outside of the Islamic faith many facts of Islam are a mystery. Within the last decade the religion of Islam has received bad publicity due to the actions of terrorists and Muslim extremists groups. Their actions have created a popular belief that Islam is a cult and Muslim people are hate filled militants that are mainly from one region. Islamic extremist terrorism shows how the misconstrued Quran can be used as a tool for violence. There are terrorist groups they have misconstrued religious ideals to justify terrorist actions Boko Haram is only one example of this. Boko Haram is the embodiment of the lack of education and the cycle of violence all manifesting in a single body. By lack of education I mean the misinterpretation of what is supposed to be good religious ideals, but instead use those ideals of violence. An obvious example of this would be taking a religion class at USD which in class we are taught how to interpret Catholicism and the Bible as a means for good. Without this basic education of the Bible, it can be constructed as a tool for violence instead simply by taking a literal translation of the Bible, namely the Old Testament, which can be used to justify murder to an uneducated person that is easily impressionable as well as accustomed to…

One of the big strengths of Islam, of which I was previously unaware, is that it can be a religion of peace. Even while he was something of a religious zealot, the author was appalled at the horror of the 9/11 attacks on the United States, and could not see how these fit into his Muslim religion. He was not only appalled at the lives lost, but also at the claim that these acts were done for Allah. This is a feeling we share when, for example, a right-wing Christian shoots up a church or a movie theater and claims they did so for God. I believe that most religions encourage a culture of peace and harmony. But with our selfish natures, some people corrupt the message and use out-of-context…

A common misconception regarding Islam in the United States is that the religion itself is new to the country. This is incorrect due to multiple reasons, including the evidence that Muslims were brought over during the era of slavery from Africa. Additionally there are records of Muslims being present on Christopher Columbus’ ship that was used to “discover” the new world. Another common misconception regarding Islam is that American Muslims are a homogeneous group. In reality American Muslims are the most diverse religious group in the United States. Individuals who recognize themselves as Muslim Americans identify as Black, White, Asian, and Hispanic. Finally, there is a stereotype that women are oppressed in Islam. Muslim women are actually the second most educated religious group of women. Furthermore the economic parody between men and women in Islam is closer than any other religious group.…

I come from a Muslim background. Islam claims to be a peaceful, loving religion. You are taught from a young age to respect everyone no matter what there background is. But yet, there are so many Muslims killing people of other faiths. Why? Even I have no answer to that. Forget about other people. I come from a religious family, and my parents have taught me to love one another. Yet two summers ago, when I visited Pakistan, I saw the religious hatred in my grandparent’s house. Our maids were Catholics, they were not allowed to drink or eat out of the same dishes that we ate from. They could not use the same bathroom as us and did not dare to sit on the same sofas we sat on. Nowhere in the Quran does it say to treat people like that. Where do we get such ideas? Islam is the religion of love, not hate.…
